Burl Newton Mitchell, age 88, of Mangum, passed away early
Monday morning, May 9, 2016, at Grace Living Center, in Mangum.
Mr. Mitchell was born on June 9, 1927, in Reed, Oklahoma, to Earl William and
Lucy Maebell (Taylor) Mitchell. During high school, Burl joined the United
States Navy where he served his country for two years. Returning from the Navy,
he graduated from Vinson High School, in 1947, and continued his education at
Southwestern State College, in Weatherford, where he received his bachelor’s
degree. On July 12, 1959, he married Joyce Wynell Keasler and they spent the
next forty-five wonderful years together before her death on November 29, 2004.
Over the next few years, Burl taught and served as a coach and administrator at
Olustee, Vinson, Duke, Reed and Southside. After leaving the teaching
profession, Burl worked for the Department of Human Services, in Mangum, and at
the Reed Coop, for a short time, before beginning to farm and run cattle, which
he did until his death. A farmer and cowman at heart, Burl didn’t have many
hobbies, but his most cherished times were times spent with his family and
friends, especially his grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his stepmom, Ethel LaCross Mitchell
and his daughter-in-law, Tammie Mitchell.
He is survived by two children, Don Mitchell of Reed and
Sheri Mulkey and husband Bob of Mangum; four grandchildren, Brandon Mitchell and
wife Kurby of Silverton, Texas, Michael Mitchell of Reed, Rebecca and JoeDon
Bruno of Weatherford and Kelly Mulkey of Mangum; two great grandchildren, Austin
Mulkey and Baron Mitchell along with a very special adopted family the Leamon's;
Tony, Joann, Dustin and Lexi and all his surviving Taylor sisters, nephews,
nieces, and cousins. Along with a whole host of other family and friends.
Funeral services for Burl Mitchell will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 12, 2016, at
the Vinson Baptist Church with Todd McRay officiating. Interment will follow at
