Jessie Thelma Miller, age 99, of Mangum, passed away late Tuesday evening, May 15, 2012, at Grace Living Center, in Mangum.
Mrs. Miller was born in Grayson, Texas on June 14, 1912, to Samuel Griffin and Callie Dona (McCarty) Trotter and moved to a farm west of Jay Buckle Spring, in Greer County, in 1927. On December 23, 1931, she married William Edward Miller, in Mangum, and he preceded her in death on February 15, 1983, after fifty-one wonderful years of marriage. After their marriage, they established their home at Jay Buckle where they farmed. In 1941, the family moved to White Flat where Ed drove the school bus and was the school custodian. Ed and Thelma later ran the White Flat station until a tornado destroyed the station and their home, inside the station, in the mid 1940’s. After the tornado, the family moved to City View where Thelma cooked at the school and Ed was the custodian and bus driver. In 1948, the family moved to Mangum where Thelma lived until her death. For many years Thelma served as a nurse’s aide and caregiver, was a waitress at several cafes and sold Studio Girl Cosmetics. A longtime member of the Mangum First Baptist Church, Thelma taught Sunday School for many years and loved to garden and can the fruits of her labors.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Mamie Elizabeth Trotter, Annie Mae McLaughlin and Willie Pauline Dorrill and four brothers, Mellon Henry Trotter, John Griffin Trotter, Joseph Olen Trotter and Ernest Roy “Jack” Trotter. She is survived by two sons, Gene Edward Miller of Mangum and Jerry Keith Miller of Granite; four grandchildren, Patty York and husband Brent of Mangum, Bob Miller of Mangum, Theresa Locke and husband David of Waukomis, Oklahoma and David Keith Miller of Granite; eight great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Thelma Miller will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 19, 2012, at the Mangum First Baptist Church with Pastor Shawn Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
