John Mark Powell, age 82, of Tallahassee, Florida passed away early Sunday morning, September 6, 2015, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Powell was born in Mangum, Oklahoma on April 14, 1933, to Hudson M. and Bonnie A. (Boone) Powell. A 1951 graduate of Mangum High School, Mark received his bachelor’s degree from Southwestern College, at Weatherford. A veteran of the United States Navy, Mark proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict from March 5, 1952 until March 4, 1956, serving aboard the USS Boxer, CV-21. Mark earned the rating of AM2, rank of E-5 and was particularly proud of earning the Good Conduct Medal. He married the love of his life, Maxine Burns, on December 23, 1956, and they spent the next fifty-eight wonderful years together before his death. Mark spent forty-three years in the insurance industry, retiring as a general adjuster.

Preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Martha Ann Powell; one brother, Hudson M. Powell, Jr. and one sister, Mary Katherine Sappington, he is survived by his wife, Maxine, of the home; two sons, John Mark Powell, Jr., and James Matthew Powell; four grandchildren, Lyndsay Ann Powell, Joshua Miller Powell, Jackson Miles Powell and Jarrett Michael Powell along with many other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Riverside Cemetery, in Mangum. Services are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home, of Mangum.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made in memory of John Mark Powell to the Mangum Alumni Association or Morningside Baptist Church Building Fund 1560 Pedrick Road, Tallahassee, FL 32317.
