Lora Jane Head, age 54 of Mangum died from respiratory distress syndrome Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the O.U. Medical Center, Oklahoma City.
Lora Jane was born in Mangum on June 14, 1955 to Kenneth Mint and Lora Jane (Bevis) Head. She attended grade school in Mangum and graduated from Mangum High School in 1973. She received an associate degree from Altus Junior College in 1975, a Bachelor of Science in Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1977 and a Master’s in Education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1984.
Over an eighteen year period, Lora taught seventh and eighth grade English in schools in Cunningham, Nashville, Zenda, and Attica, Kansas. She also taught classes for students with disabilities. She loved her students, and they loved her.
During her teaching career, Lora was listed in Who’s Who of American Teachers. She was a cheerleading sponsor, worked with the Girl Scouts and gave many additional hours in her day to her students and to her schools.
Lora was a kind, generous and thoughtful person. She had a bright smile and was always glad to see or hear from family and friends. She was fun-loving, very competitive and especially liked to play Scrabble and Monopoly. Although she struggled with health issues the last several years, she never let that get her down.
Lora had a special interest in and affection for cats. She understood them and thoroughly enjoyed their antics. Over the years she looked after countless strays, adopted many and usually had a house full of cats. She is survived by four cats, Blaze Allen, Precious Ann, Thomas and Smokey Lee, all of whom will miss her dearly.
Lora professed her Christian faith at First Baptist Church Mangum where her mother and sister were members.
Lora was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Head. She is survived by her mother, Lora Jane Head of Cushing, her sister, Carol Dennis and her husband Tommy, niece Kristin Dennis Beitz and her husband Mark and their daughter Kaylin, all of Cushing, and uncle, Joe Head, of Mangum, and dear friends Teresa and Buddy Lamb and Leon Hood of Mangum.
A graveside services will be held at the Riverside Cemetery in Mangum on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Casey Paxton of Mangum officiating. The service is under the direction of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing.
