Melvin W. Avery, age 78, of Mangum, passed away Saturday evening, December 11, 2010, at his residence.
Melvin was born on August 9, 1932, in Mangum, to Audrey Mills and Emma Blanche (Wells) Avery. After graduating from Mangum High School, in 1951, he married Alice Ruth Snipes, the mother of his two children, in 1956. Melvin owned and operated the Mangum Self Serve Laundry until 1960, when he moved to California and worked doing drywall and hanging sheetrock. In 1967, Melvin moved back to Mangum and bought Slick’s Drive Inn and operated it for the next forty years until his health began to fail in July of 2007. During those forty years, Melvin fed many hungry people and helped rear many young people in his own nurturing way. On June 15, 1993, Melvin married Jean Leamon, at Cedar Lake, and they spent the next seventeen wonderful years together. A pillar of his community, Melvin was always willing to help others or “go the second mile” for someone else. Cooking, fishing, cracking pecans and OU sports were some of Melvin’s hobbies.
Preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Alton Avery, Marvin Avery and Doyle “Slick” Avery and two sisters, Rena McCauley and Ruth Smith, he is survived by his wife, Jean, of the home; two sons, Michael Audrey Avery and wife Treva of Mangum and Joe Wayne Avery of Mangum; two stepchildren, Patricia Ann Young and husband David Todd of Mangum and Steven Young of Canadian, Texas; two brothers, Kent Avery and wife Marcia of Oregon and Allen Wade Avery of Mangum; two step grandchildren, Phillesia Cathey and Autum Young; three step great grandchildren, Jordan Argo, Tuff Cathey and Serenity Young along with many other nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
