Allen Wade Avery, Sr., age 88, of Mangum, passed away late Monday evening, February 27, 2012, at Grace Living Center, in Mangum.
Mr. Avery was born in Jester, Oklahoma on July 18, 1923, to Audrey Mills and Emma Blanche (Wells) Avery. He was raised in Mangum and married Ruby Francis Warden, of Mangum, on April 28, 1941, and they spent the next sixty-two wonderful years together before her death on May 19, 2003. A member of the United States Navy, Wade proudly served his country during WWII. After being discharged from the navy, the family resided in California where they lived for twenty years. During that time he was an employee of Hughes Aircraft Company. The family later returned to Mangum and bought the Moonlite Café. Wade later was a Food Service Supervisor at Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite, for twenty years. After retiring from the Reformatory he bought Slick’s Drive Inn where he enjoyed working with his brother Melvin Avery for many years. An avid fisherman and hunter his whole life, Wade even made his own lures. He was a very proud husband, father and grandfather. Most importantly, Wade Avery believed that Jesus Christ was the only way of salvation and eternal life.
Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby; two sisters, Ruth and Rena; four brothers, Alton, Marvin, Doyle “Slick”, Melvin and a son, Allen Wade Avery, Jr., he is survived by one brother, Kent Avery of Albany, Oregon; two children, Linda Francis and husband Gary of Birmingham, Alabama; Jeff Avery and wife Tamara of Glenpool, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law, Janelle Avery of Wheaton, Illinois; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
The family extends their deepest appreciation to Grace Living Center-Mangum for their love and care of “Dad” during the final months of his life.
Graveside services for Wade Avery will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Riverside Cemetery with Todd McRay officiating. Services are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
