Carl Wayne Allgood, Sr., age 69, of Vernon, Texas passed away early Thursday morning, June 3, 2010, at United Regional Health Care Center in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Mr. Allgood was born in Mangum, Oklahoma on September 18, 1940, to Carl and Flora Oleta (Stover) Allgood. After attending Mangum Schools, he and his dad owned and operated Allgood and Sons Reliable Used Cars and also owned a salvage yard. For a time, he worked at Ponder Chevrolet and enjoyed attending auto auctions. On two different occasions, Carl served his country in the Oklahoma National Guard, retiring with twenty years of service to his country after proudly serving overseas during Desert Storm. Carl also worked at the Oklahoma State Reformatory for eleven years and then moved to Vernon, Texas where he served as a corrections officer at the Vernon State Hospital until retirement. In 1957, he married Ruby Alice Chitwood and together they had four children. On May 5, 1988, he married Mary Ann Green and they spent the next twenty-two wonderful years together. An avid piano player, Carl also enjoyed raising and training Quarter horses, trading cars, and spending time with his family and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, David Wayne Allgood; three sisters, Doris Jean Allgood, Mary Sue Campbell and Linda Brandon and one step-daughter, Kristi O’Guin, he is survived by his wife, Mary Allgood of the home in Vernon, Texas; seven children, Carl Wayne Allgood, Jr. and wife Helen of Mangum, Elizabeth Norman and husband Ed of Mangum, Carolyn Skinner and husband Jerry of Mangum, Kimberly Nichols of Deer Park, Texas, Jimmy Freeman and wife Susan of Houston, Texas, Bob O’Guin and wife Melissa of Boston, Massachusetts and Cari Pike and husband Donny of Wichita Falls, Texas; twenty grandchildren; six great grandchildren and many other relatives.
Funeral services for Carl Allgood, Sr., will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 7, 2010, at Greer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Shawn Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home.
The family will greet friends on Sunday, June 6, 2010, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Greer Funeral Home. Online tributes may be made to the family at www.GreerFuneral.com
