Effie LaFern Avery, age 90, of Granite passed away on Tuesday morning, September 25, 2012, at her residence in Granite, surrounded by her loving family.
 
Mrs. Avery was born in Granite, on June 15, 1922, to Charlie Wilford and Mattie Golden (Caddel) Matheny. After graduating from Granite School, in 1940, she married Marvin Avery on August 16, 1942. He preceded her in death on January 12, 1996, after fifty-three wonderful years of marriage. During her life, LaFern lived in many different places with Marvin’s jobs. They spent time in California, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah while Marvin was employed with El Paso Natural Gas. Lafern loved working in her yard and sewing for her family and many people in the community. She also loved making jelly and giving it away to family and friends.
 
Lafern was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, Marvin Avery and Troy Maynard.

She is survived by three children, Charles Keith Avery and wife Durelle of Lohn, Texas, Carole Avery of Granite and Deborah Bayles and husband Joel of Blanding Utah; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three sisters, Wilene Jones and husband Mavis of Stillwater, Margaret Jo Jones and husband Fred of Granite and Jean Hanks and husband Gail of Granite; two brothers, Charles Matheny and wife Mildred of Lake Creek, Oklahoma and Jimmy Matheny and wife Wanda of Granite along with many other relatives and a host of friends.


Graveside memorial services for LaFern Avery will be at 3 p.m., Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Granite City Cemetery with Ken Hamilton officiating. Services are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Granite.
