After graduating from Wakita High School in 1958, he attended Phillips University in Enid, OK, on a baseball scholarship graduating in 1962. He was married to K. Kyle Dahlem on June 11, 1960, and to this union were born two children, Stephanie Lynn and Stephen Paul.

He retired from education in 2009 and took up a new career as a real estate agent. When he was 50 years old, he was adopted by his step-father, Roy Cromwell.

You could often find John with his friends on a golf course or with Kyle at a baseball game. He loved God, Kyle, and the Houston Astros in that order.
