Wakita Cemetery


The funeral for Eldon Max Best, 79, of Enid will be 2 p.m. Monday at Oakwood Christian Church. The Revs. Dan Wilson and Michael Frisbie, Sr. will officiate. Burial will follow in Wakita Cemetery. Arrangements are by Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He was born July 22, 1926, at Hawley to Clarence W. and Mabel C. Downing Best and died Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, at Greenbrier Skilled Nursing, Enid.

He graduated from Gore Consolidated School. He enlisted in the Navy June 23, 1944, and served as a water tender, third class until his honorable discharge June 7, 1946.

He married Melba Rose Mallory April 10, 1947, at University Place Christian Church, Enid.

He spent most of his life as an over-the-road truck driver.

He was a member of Oakwood Christian Church serving as an elder and Sunday school superintendent.

Surviving are his wife, Melba of the home; three daughters, Paula Barnett, Lou Ann Burdg, and Nancy Truman, all of Enid; two brothers, Gerald D. Best of Enid, and Larry Best of Port St. Lucie, Fla; one sister, Lois Hooley of Enid; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

A Celebration of Life Service for Melba Best, 88, of Enid, will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at Oakwood Christian Church with The Rev. Eric Keller and The Rev. Alan Seibel officiating. Burial will follow at Wakita Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Melba was born Dec. 29, 1926, in Alva to Clifford and Esther Wise Mallory and passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, in St. Mary’s Regional Hospital. She grew up in Wakita and attended Wakita Schools. She worked for Southwestern Bell before she met and married Eldon Best on April 10, 1947, in Enid. She was a member of Oakwood Christian Church, Seekers Sunday school class and Primetimers.

Melba is survived by her daughters, Paula and husband Cliff Barnett, Lou Ann and husband Harvey Burdg, and Nancy and husband Don Truman, all of Enid; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; and brother Dean and wife Katie Mallory of Wakita and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Memorials may be made to Dan Wilson Legacy Fund at Oakwood Christian Church, with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.
