The funeral for Harry James Smetana, 83, of Medford, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Medford. The Rev. Bobby Smith and Jim Thorpe will officiate. Burial will be in Rosemound Cemetery, Medford. Military honors will be conducted by the Army. Arrangements are by Hills-Ely Funeral Home, Medford.
He was born July 13, 1923, near Renfrow to William and Alice G. Kilian Smetana and died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, in Wakita.
He attended country schools and graduated from Medford High School in 1941. He entered the Army in 1943, serving in the military police. He received the Purple Heart and was honorably discharged in 1945.
He married Alice May Capper Feb. 12, 1949, in Wichita, Kan. He worked for Cessna and Boeing aircraft companies until moving to Medford in 1952. He began farming. He served as Grant County sheriff from 1977 to 1981 and then started his own private security company. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Medford. He was president of Clyde Co-op Association board for several years.
Surviving are two sons, Charles J. Smetana of Medford and Todd J. Smetana of Tulsa; one sister, Ruby Johnson of Wichita; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice May, on July 3, 1964.
