ENID, Okla. — Louis Gene Kroutil was born on the family farm north of Stillwater on Feb. 11, 1933, to Tony and Elizabeth (Gallagher) Kroutil. He passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2014, at his home in Medford at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 23 days.
Louis graduated from Eureka High School in 1951 and worked seismographing for a year until joining the military. He took his basic training at Camp Rucker, Ala., and spent his military time there from 1952 to 1954. Louis became employed at the Grant County ASCS Office in Medford in March 1954 and retired from that office in 1994. During his tenure as ASCS, he did crop appraisals across Oklahoma and Kansas.
Louis was a field man, measuring bins and acreages in Grant County, and was a program assistant keeping records of storage and fertilizer facilities and other farm programs. He also read rural water meters in Grant County, assisted Hills-Ely Funeral Home, helped Holden Insurance, installed television cable for Eugene Kretchmar, worked evening and weekends at the W.B. Johnston elevator during harvest, helped at Stewart Hardware and Johnson Heat and Air, and cleaned at the Civic Center, the Medford County Agriculture offices and the Koch plant over the years.
Louis was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years and served as commander of the post in Medford for many years.
Louis and Erma (Franz) were married at the Methodist Church in Caldwell, Kan., on Nov. 26, 1952. They lived in Enterprise, Ala., while Louis was in the Army. Louis and Erma made their home in Medford following his military service and have one son, Rodney. Louis and Erma celebrated more than 61 years of marriage together. They met at the Medford TG&Y store when Louis was seismographing in the area and Erma was a clerk at the store.
Louis and Erma were members of the Congregational Church in Medford where Louis served as secretary until its closing, later attending the First Baptist Church in Medford.
Louis was very social, a “people person,” and enjoyed visiting with everyone and “going to coffee.” He also liked animals and had many special pets over the years. His hobbies were collecting antiques, bicycling, fishing and traveling.
Louis and Erma went to Branson, Mo., many times for shopping, shows and Silver Dollar City. They also made trips to Hawaii, Chicago, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, Florida, Texas, Utah, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Colorado, New Mexico, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Erma; son, Rodney and wife, Dana of Edmond, Okla.; brother, Wayne Kroutil and wife, Willene of Owasso, Okla.; a special nephew, Dennis Myers and wife, Beverly of Oswego, Ill.; a special great niece, Michelle Pagoria and husband, Matt and son, Ethan of Aurora, Ill., and numerous niece, nephews, cousins and friends.
The service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Medford on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Bob Smith and the Rev. Jonathan Gilliland officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by the United States Army will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Viewing will be at Lanman Funeral Home, Inc., of Medford, 108 W. Cherokee, Sunday, April 6, 2014, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. with the family present from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The casket will also be open at the funeral home on Monday, April 7, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Condolences may be made online at www.lanmanmemo rials.com
The family would like to thank the numerous family members and friends who visited or called at the hospital or at home during Louis’ lengthy illness and especially the caregivers, special nurses and doctors who assisted in so many ways.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church sound and lighting system fund, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or a church of your choice.
