ENID — Graveside service for Marva Jean Brown, Enid, will be 10:30 a.m. today, Sept. 27, 2011, in Rosemound Cemetery, Medford, with Pastor Craig VanDeburgh officiating, under direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. Following at 2 p.m. will be a Celebration of Life, "A Day of Rejoicing" service, to celebrate the life of Marva Jean Brown, with Pastor Pat Sutherlin officiating in Brown-Cummings Funeral Home Chapel.
Marva Jean was born in Enid, the daughter of Rhea Jane (McDaniel) and Christian Earl Herschberger and passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at Stillwater Medical Center.
She was raised and attended school in Medford. She was baptized in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Medford and attended Christian Church of the Covenant in Enid.
She was a graduate of Medford High School and attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha and Phillips University in Enid, where she studied business.
She married Jene L. Hodges and had two children, George Gregory and Jane Ann. Jene preceded her in death. She later married William S. (Bill) Brown in 1978, who also preceded her in death.
She was employed by Grant County court clerk's office for 22 years, later employed by Garfield County court clerk's office to complete 40 years of service, retiring in 1990.
She was a 50-plus-year member of P.E.O. Sisterhood, currently a member of Chapter GF, Enid. She enjoyed Life Long Learning, Republican Women's Club, Red Hatters and playing bridge.
She is survived by children, Greg Hodges and wife Linda of Oklahoma City and Ann Embree of Stillwater; Jean's second husband's children, Melissa Logan of Florida, Laura and husband Mitch Miller of Moore and Shane Brown of Dallas; three cherished grandchildren, Jamie Bellah and husband David of Stillwater, Lance Embree and wife Rachel of Sedgwick, Kan., and Ashley Hodges of Norman; great-grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth Bellah, twins, Grant Douglas Bellah and Sydney Jane Bellah of Stillwater, Garrett Duncan Embree and Gage Daniel Embree, all of Sedgwick, Kan.; sister-in-law, Joyce Grubbs of Anderson, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; brother, Max Herschberger; sister, Doris Evans; and mother-in-law, Permelia Hodges.
She will be greatly missed as she had a passion for life and was an eternal optimist while having leukemia for 20-plus years.
Memorials may be made in her memory to First Christian Church of Medford or Oklahoma Medical Research, leukemia division, with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
