Funeral services for Leonard Thorne, age 82 of Enid will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2005 in Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Ron Olsen will officiate. Burial will follow in the garden chapel of Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
He was born June 6, 1923 near Pond Creek to Raymond and Amy Schoonover Thorne and died Friday, September 9, 2005 in Mercy Hospital in Ardmore.
Leonard grew up near Pond Creek and graduated from Hunter High School in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 22, 1943 and served aboard the U.S.S. Guadalcanal during WWII. After returning to the family farm in 1946, Leonard married Dorothy Hanson on January 26, 1949. At the time of his death he had been married for 56 years with his loving wife by his side. He has farmed and ranched in Grant, Garfield and Pawnee Counties for over 55 years. Leonard served on the Board of Directors for Pioneer Telephone Cooperative, Inc. from 1972 to 2000, where he acted as president from 1990 to 1996. He was a member of the Enid Moose Lodge and the Pond Creek Masonic Lodge and American Legion.. Leonard worked in carpentry with Kenny Schultz for many summers and helped build many of the grain elevators in the northern Oklahoma area. Leonard attended the Hunter Methodist Church, the Pond Creek Christian Church, and the Cedar Ridge Wesleyan Church.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy and their children, Carolyn and her husband Dr. William Simon, David Thorne and his wife Susan, and Danny Thorne and his wife Peggy; grandchildren, Jeffery Haskins and his wife Angela, Julie and her husband Travis Holder, Ryan Haskins and his wife Sandra, Amy and Blake Thorne, Sarah and Abby Thorne, three great grandchildren, Emma Haskins and Raygan Holder and Dilla Holder. He is also survived by his twin sister, Leah and her husband Roy Wilson, his brother Forrest Johnson and his wife Marilyn, his sisters-in-law Helen Thorne and Arlis Johnson.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Ebert Johnson and his brothers, Lawrence Thorne and Harold Johnson.
Memorials can made through the funeral home to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Alzheimer's Division. (Paid Obit 9-12-1)
