POND CREEK — Violet Jewel Tharp, 91, of Pond Creek, Okla., passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013. She was born Sept. 4, 1921, in Sharon, Kan., to Franklin M. Byers and Osie Evelena Rogers of Barber Co., Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Homer; sister, Goldie; her husband, Eldon of 49 years; and daughters, Linda and Kathleen.

She is survived by her son, Gary and daughter-in-law, Carolyn of Pond Creek, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Violet was living in Sharon, Kan., where she met Eldon when she was “sweet 16” and he was 22. They exchanged their wedding vows on Dec. 5, 1943, at the pastor’s home in Dodge City, Kan. The Tharp’s had three children: son, Gary, and daughters, Linda and Kathleen, when they moved to Las Vegas, Nev. in 1954.

After retirement, Violet and Eldon decided to make their home in Amargosa Valley and purchased land in 1980. Their love for the outdoors was evident by how they took five acres of desert land and transformed it into a virtual oasis of greenery, Eldon’s fruit trees and Violet’s vegetable gardens.

One of Violets’ best memories was the day of her salvation, when she was 19-years-old at the Christian Church in Sharon, Kan. She also cherished her memories working for the Billy Graham Crusade in Las Vegas, Nev. She was a dedicated Christian, leading several ladies Bible study groups in her numerous church organizations and did lots of volunteer work for the Baptist church in Amargosa Valley and Pahrump, Nev.

Besides being a great mother and homemaker, she won a number of senior citizen contests, Mrs. Nye County and Mrs. Las Vegas among them.

She was quite a ham in her skits on the big stage.

Violet’s last day was spent peacefully. “And we know that all things work together for the good of those that love God, of those who are the called according to His purpose.” She will be sorely missed by family, loved ones and friends, but will not be forgotten! “Rest in Peace, Violet, you fought the good fight and kept the faith!”

Memorial graveside service is 4 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, in Pond Creek Cemetery. Arrangements by Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek.

Memorials may be made to Pond Creek Ambulance Fund or Pond Creek Cemetery Association.
