January 10, 1918 - May 4, 1994Funeral service for L.O. Sills, 76, will be Saturday, 10:30 AM in United Methodist Church, Medford, Oklahoma, with Rev. Dan Eischen and Rev. Helen Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Pond Creek. L.O. Died Wednesday, May 4, 1994, in an Enid hospital.
L.O. was born January 10, 1918, at Woodward, Oklahoma, the son of Joe and Bertha Sills. He attended school there graduating from high school in 1937.
He was engaged in the newspaper business for many years, starting at age 10 selling area daily newspapers on the streets of Woodward. During his sophomore year he began part-time work with the Woodward County Republican and after graduating, worked for a time with the daily at Guymon. He returned to Woodward and worked for the Woodward County Journal until entering the Navy in 1943, serving as signal man aboard the USS Atascosa in the Pacific Theatre until the close of WW II.
He and Nellie Carmichael of Taloga were married in 1939 and after being discharged from the Navy in December 1945, they purchased the Helena Star in January 1946, operating it until May 1957 when they purchased the Pond Creek Herald. They operated the newspapers at Pond Creek and Lamont until November 1974 when they sold them, with him remaining as manager. Mrs. Sills died in 1975.
On March 25, 1977, he married Betty Clymer, Seattle, and they established a home in Medford. In March, 1980 they purchased the Medford, Pond Creek, and Lamont newspapers and published them until September 1990, when ill health forced his retirement.
He was a longtime member of the Oklahoma Press Association – from 1946 to 1990 – and for a number of years served on various Association committees. At the mid-– winter meeting of the group of 1982, he received his 50 – year Half Century Club pin and certificate in recognition of service in the Oklahoma newspaper industry.
In addition to the memberships in various civic clubs, he was also a member of the United Methodist Church, and was one of the charter vice-presidents of Oklahoma Northwest (now Red Carpet Country). While at Helena he was a member of Helena town board. He served a number of years on the Pond Creek City Council, resigning the post when he moved to Medford. He has also been a member of the board of directors of the First State Bank of Goltry for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nellie, and three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife Betty of the home in Enid; three daughters, Paula Whitson and husband, Preston, Tulsa; Anita Cribley and husband, Kenny Jr., Enid; and Sarah Stern and husband, Jack, Monterey, California; and one son, Richard Clymer and wife, Stephanie, Fairbanks, Alaska; and grandchildren, Dr. Brian Whitson, Shreveport, Louisiana, Lisa Freiner, Tulsa; Rusty Claflin, Tulsa, Casey Cribley, Enid; Jennifer and Rachel Clymer, Fairbanks, Alaska; Kenny Cribley III, Enid; Brandi Mitchell, Enid, and Shana LaMar, Edmond.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Churches of Medford or Pond Creek, or Bethany United Methodist Church, Enid.
