Herbert L. Bailey Jr. was born Dec. 3, 1934, to Herb and Pauline Bailey in Enid, Okla., where he grew up, and went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, March 18, 2015.
Herb was an avid sportsman in the Enid schools. He coached many junior leagues when he was in junior high and high school. He played football for Enid High and they won the State Championship his Senior year.
After graduating he went to Tulsa University to play college football. Herb loved following several sports teams such as Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma City Thunder and especially all of his children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities.
When his parents purchased Bailey Chevrolet Agency in Pond Creek, he joined them to help in the dealership. Along with working in the dealership, Herb was involved in many other businesses, including a manufacturing plant and chroming house.
Upon moving to Pond Creek, he met and married his wife of 60 years, Barbara Bailey. Out of that marriage came their two children, Tonya Bailey McKenzie and Herbie Lee “Butch” Bailey. They gave them seven grandchildren and the grandchildren gave them eight great-grandchildren.
Herb was Herb and Pauline’s only child and when he married Barbara he always said, “When I married Barbara, I got another mother, a brother and two sisters,” that he loved very much.
As long as his health let him, he met with his high school graduating class every Saturday morning and reminisced over high school days. He also loved to meet at the Pond Creek coffee shop, where they met daily and solved all the world’s problems. Herb loved people and never met a stranger.
He was very involved in his community. He was a volunteer fire fighter for the Pond Creek Fire Department for the maximum years he could serve. He was involved in the Lion’s Club, the Chamber of Commerce and was honored as Businessman of the Year. For 25 years Herb was Santa Claus and made his entrance into Pond Creek on the back of a fire truck.
Herb was a Gideon, where he held many Gideon services from Grant County to Oklahoma City and loved to distribute Bibles. He was very active in Aglow International (a Christian organization).
Herb worked in his church and held many offices such as Sunday School Superintendent, Finance Committee, Youth Director, and wherever he was needed.
Herb loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and had a special love for pastors. He loved to entertain the pastors in his home. Until his health began to decline, he had every pastor and their family in his home.
In his later years he transferred his membership to Enid First Assembly of God, where he ushered for several years and loved his Pastor Dan very much.
Herb leaves behind the love of his life, his wife, Barbara Bailey; daughter, Tonya McKenzie and husband Larry McKenzie; son, Herbie Lee “Butch” Bailey; grandsons, Brandon Bailey, Michael McKenzie, Barton Bailey, Matthew McKenzie and Marcus McKenzie; granddaughters, Michelle McKenzie and Brooke Bailey-Mays; great-grandchildren, Makenna, Brock, Thomas, Jackson, Ruby, Boaz, Mason and Mabelle; one brother, Leon Conway; and two sisters, Beverly Page and Pat Wilkens and their families.
