Ellen Merlene Wilson passed away on Oct. 15, 2019, at the age of 83 due to complications from Alzheimer's.
Merlene, as she is known by her family and friends, was born Feb. 8, 1936, and grew up in Pond Creek, Okla., on her family farm. Merlene was a member of the Pond Creek High School basketball team as a guard. She continued playing basketball at Oklahoma Baptist University where she earned her teaching degree. After graduation, Merlene and her husband moved to Los Angeles, Calif., for a short time and then settled in Chula Vista, Calif., where she began her 40-year carrier as a kindergarten teacher for the San Diego School District until her retirement.
Merlene never lost her love for basketball, and after she retired, she joined a senior women's basketball league. While playing in the league, she participated in several tournaments and played in the Senior Olympics basketball game.
Merlene is survived by her brother Elvin Hardiman, her sons Barry Wilson of Fresno, Calif., and Daniel Wilson of Camarillo, Calif., and her daughter Jeanne Carver of North Platte, Neb. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Eric, Brian, Amanda, Britney, Beth and Katy, along with two great-grandchildren, Parker and Sophia.
A family and friends viewing service will be held at Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek Okla., Friday, Oct. 18, 2019, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019, at the First Baptist Church of Pond Creek with Pastor Les Washnock officiating. Merlene will be buried with her family at Mount Zion Cemetery in Nash, Okla. Memorials to Mt. Zion Cemetery or the First Baptist Church of Pond Creek with Wilson Funeral Home as custodian.
