Ethel C. Spoon, resident of Ponca City and formerly of Lamont, OK died June 28, 2014 at Willow Haven Nursing Center in Tonkawa. She was 89 years old. A graveside service will be Wednesday morning, July 2, at 10:00 at the cemetery in Lamont, OK with Rev. Jeff McReynolds officiating. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice or the First Christian Church in Lamont.
Ethel was born on February 12, 1925 to George and Mary Jane Dunlap Russell in Marland, OK. She attended school in Marland and graduated from Ponca City High School. Ethel attended nurses training at St. Joseph Hospital in Ponca City and graduated as a registered nurse cadet scheduled to enter the United States Army Medical Corp; however, due to the end of World War II, she was released from her military commitment. Ethel worked as a registered nurse for many years and retired in 1996. For many years, Ethel was an active member in the First Christian Church of Lamont. She was a long-time member of the Lamont American Legion Auxiliary and was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Ethel married Earl J. Spoon in Lamont on December 8, 1946, who preceded her in death in 1996.
She is survived by one son, John Spoon and wife Connie of Tonkawa and one daughter, Madonna Todd and husband Bill of Sapulpa. Her grandchildren are Charity Maulsby and husband Randy of Claremore, Brent Todd of Houston, Texas, Ashton Fitzgerald and husband Brent of Bixby, Paul Spoon of Edmond and Melanie Spoon of Edmond. Great-grandchildren are Olivia and Alaina Maulsby and Addison and Merideth Dry. Ethel is survived by one sister, Hilda Miller of Ponca City.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Herbert and Harold and sisters Grace, Alpha, Alma, Hazel, Emma, Eva Bell, Bertha, Blanche and Georgia.
Anderson Funeral Home, Tonkawa, is in charge of arrangements.
