ENID, Okla. — Kenneth Hedges was born Oct. 3, 1919, four miles east of Lamont, Okla., to Percy and Etha Cowen Hedges. He passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, in Enid, Okla., at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 24 days.
When he was only three months old, his mother died, so he and his brother, J.P., were raised by their grandparents, John and Elizabeth Cowen. After a year at Lamont High School, he went to live with his father in Wink, Texas, and graduated from high school there. He spent 21?2 years at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, before volunteering for the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a pilot for nearly four years during WWII, flying 67 combat missions in the South Pacific and achieving the rank of captain.
Upon his return from overseas, he married Winifred Soucek Hardwick on Feb. 10, 1945. At that time, he was an instrument flight instructor at the Enid and then the Lubbock Army Air Fields.
When he was honorably discharged, he and Winifred farmed east of Lamont for 37 years. For 20 years, he was a rural mail carrier in Lamont and Pawhuska, while still running his Lamont farm.
Upon his retirement, they bought a home and moved into Lamont. It was at this time that they enjoyed RVing all over the U.S. On Feb. 3, 2003, they moved to Golden Oaks Retirement Villiage in Enid.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brother.
He leaves his stepsister, Norma Timmons of Brownfield, Texas; sister-in-law, Dahlia Hedges of Midwest City; several nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends to celebrate the life of this man who was a great example to all who knew him.
He was a member of Lamont Christian Church and American Legion.
Kenneth’s funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at First Christian Church, Lamont, with the Rev. Jeff McReynolds officiating. Interment will follow in Lamont Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lamont Christian Church or the charity of donor’s choice.
