Wilfred Leon Shire © Enid News and Eagle 12-17-2021 Submitted by: Glenn
May 6, 1930 - December 17, 2021Wilfred "Fred" Leon Shire was born May 6, 1930, at the farm near Medford to Ivan and Aileen (Palmer) Shire. He passed away December 17, 2021, at Integris Bass Hospital at the age of 91.
He was united in marriage to Donna Fern Cox on January 9, 1949, in Jefferson, Oklahoma. To this union four boys were born, Steven, Roger, Douglas and Daniel.
Fred owned and operated a gas station in Jefferson, bought cattle and ran the roping chute at the Pond Creek rodeo for many years. He was most remembered for being a farmer and truck driver. His CB handle was "Bull Slinger." No one could possibly know how many miles he traveled with that 45-foot straight trailer.
His love for reading the newspaper, socializing, and meticulous checks on his truck and trailer probably contributed to his nickname "Fast Freddy," and the fact that it would usually take him two days to travel to OKC and back. Fred's slow-to-anger attitude and kind heart contributed to his spoiling and love for his grandchildren. He would happily spend hours bragging about them to any one he could get to listen.
He is survived by sons Steven (Deb) Shire of Enid, Roger Shire of Medford, and Douglas Shire of Pond Creek; his greatest joys, eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; sisters Beverly Taylor and Karen Frederick; brother Marvin Shire. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna Fern; parents; son Daniel Shire; brothers Joseph "Sonny" Shire, Loren Shire, Gail Shire, Ronald Shire; sister Shirley Snipes.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at Wilson Funeral Home in Pond Creek. Funeral Service 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Pond Creek Christian Church. Burial at Hawley Cemetery.
