© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma 25 November 1938 Lafayette Talkington PIONEER CITIZEN SUCCUMBS AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS Lafayette Talkington was born in Jennings county, Indiana, May 27, 1850, passed away at his home in Verden, Oklahoma, November 17, 1938, at the age of 88 years, 5 months and 20 days. He grew to young manhood in Appanoose county, Iowa, and was united in marriage to Mirari Baldwin in the year of 1871, and to this union were born three children, W. H. Talkington, now of Hydro, Mrs. Allie Van Benthusen of Seymour, Iowa and S. E. Talkington of Verden. He left Iowa for Nebraska in 1873 where he and his brother-in-law were the first white settler in what is now known as Hitchcock county, Nebraska, which was eighteen miles west of any other settlement. Later they moved to Kansas, and while there in the year of 1886, his wife passed away. He remarried in 1889 to Jane Seapy and to this union were born eleven children, four having preceded him in death. In 1891 he came to Stroud, Oklahoma and lived there until 1902, when he moved to a farm north of Verden, then in 1918 he moved into town where he has lived until the time of his death. He was converted when he was a boy in Iowa and after moving to Verden united with the Christian church. Grandpa Talkington, as he was commonly known around Verden, [was] loved and respected by everyone. He was one of the old pioneers of the west and took great pride in telling of his experiences. He was ever ready and willing to render assistance to all who needed him, always thinking of the comfort of others. His was a heart of gold. He was a loving husband, a kind and indulgent father. Realizing that the end was near, he made the statement that he felt he had lived a useful life and wanted to be sure that nothing had been left undone for he was prepared and unafraid to meet his maker. He was active until a few days before his death. Surviving members of his family are his wife, Mrs. Jane Talkington, sons and daughters W. H. Talkington of Hydro, Mrs. Allie Van Benthusen of Seymour, Iowa, S. E. Talkington, Fred Talkington, Mrs. Susie Frick, Jess Talkington, Mrs. Cora Fowler, Mrs. Inez Smith, Mildred Talkington, all of Verden and Mrs. Rose Dodson of Oklahoma City, twenty eight grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild, Bobbie Miller of Hydro of whom he was very proud, one sister, Mrs. Kate Elgin of Centerville, Iowa, three brothers, Ott and Jess Talkington of Craig, Colo, George Talkington of Hoxie, Kansas also a host of other relatives and friends. TALKINGTON Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Talkington were held Monday at 4 p.m. in the Methodist Church with Rev. James Wilkerson officiating. Mrs. Talkington passed away Saturday, June 11 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jack Fowler. She was born May 10, 1866 in Dubuque, Iowa and was married to Lafayette Talkington at Manhattan, Kansas on August 8, 1889. Mr. and Mrs. Talkington moved to Oklahoma in 1890 and settled on a farm north of Verden in 1903. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God. Survivors are: three sons, W. H. Talkington of Hydro, Sam and Fred Talkington of Verden; five daughters, Mrs. Rose Dodson of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Inez Smith of Lindsay, Mrs. Susie Frick, Mrs. Cora Fowler, Miss Mildred Talkington, all of Verden, 28 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, and 33 great great grandchildren. Mrs. Aubrey Finley and Mrs. Harry Dodson sang 'Beyond the Sunset,' 'Rock of Ages,' and 'Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.' Casket bearers were Bryan Manning and O. E. Manning, Okla. City, Donald Talkington, Cement, Howard Talkington of Mooreland, Cecil Talkington of Hydro, and Lee Talkington, Verden, all grandsons. Talkington were held at 2:30 p.m. March 1, in the First Methodist Church with the Rev. A. B. Hickman, pastor, officiating. Mrs. W. A. Finley, Mrs. Harry Dodson, Mrs. Dale Henricks and Mrs. Chester Heavin, accompanied by Mrs. Don Brown at the piano, sang 'When They Ring Those Golden Bells,' 'No Night There' and 'Beyond the Sunset.' Casket bearers were Paul DeBoard, W. A. Finley, Dank Pitts, Roy Nicholas, Cecil Nicholas and Allen Watson. Interment was in the Verden Cemetery under the direction of the Hansen Funeral Home. Mr. Talkington was born June 23, 1886 in Blaine, Kansas and died February 26 at 10:30 a.m. in the Anadarko Hospital following a lengthy illness. He moved with his parents to Stroud, Okla., in 1891 and to the Verden community in 1902 where he lived the rest of his life, with the exception of 14 years spent in California. He was married to Miss Rose Sawyer in 1907 and to Mrs. Nell Garland, Aug. 11, 1932. He was a member of the Dutton Methodist Church and of the IOOF Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Nell, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Viola Osborne of Cement: one step-daughter, Mrs. Esther Smith of Mena; five step-sons, Perry Reed of Phoenix, Ariz., Walter Garland of Reseda, Calif., Dan Garland of South Gate, Calif.; Howard Garland of Thousand Oaks. |

Talkington, age 57, were held Monday afternoon in the First Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. James Wilkerson officiating, assisted by Rev. E. H. Grose of Cement. Mr. C. E. Warburton and Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Seago sang "Take My Hand Precious Lord," "Near the Cross," and "Have Thine Own Way Lord" accompanied by Mrs. C. E. Warburton. Casket bearers were Paul DeBoard, Harry Dodson, Dank Pitts, V. E. Griffith, Ernest Gardner and Alvy Norman. The I. O. O. F. Lodge had charge of the Committal Rites with Cecil Nicholas and George Tippet officiating. Mr. Talkington was born June 26, 1902 at Stroud, Oklahoma and passed away October 4, 1959 in the Anadarko hospital after a lengthy illness. He moved to Verden with his parents in 1904. In 1924 he was married to Miss Ruth Otey and to this union were born three sons. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and of the I. O. O. F. Lodge No. 374. Survivors are his wife, Ruth of the home, three sons, Richard of New Orleans, La., Donald of Cement and Howard of Spearman, Texas. Five grandchildren, his mother, Mrs. Jane Talkington, Verden; three brothers, Will of Hydro, Sam and Fred of Verden; five sisters, Mrs. Rose Dodson of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Susie Frick of Verden, Mrs. Cora Fowler of Verden, Mrs. Inez Smith of Lindsay, and Miss Mildred Talkington of Verden and a host of other relatives and friends. Talkington, age 93, of Chickasha, formerly of Verden, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2001, at the Verden United Methodist Church. Rev. Edward Whitley will officiate. Ruth was born the daughter of T.E. Otey and Gertrude White Otey on August 14, 1907, in the Laverty Community, Indian Territory. She died on February 7, 2001, in Chickasha. Ruth grew up in the Laverty Community and later graduated from Verden High School. After graduation, she married Jess Talkington in November of 1924. Ruth lived in Verden for most of her life. After the death of her husband, she ran for the city clerk in Verden and held that position for many years. After her retirement, Ruth continued to work at various jobs. Ruth was a member of the Verden United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Jess, and son, Donald, who will meet her in heaven. Survivors include: son, Richard Talkington of Houston, TX; son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Marie Talkington of Liberty, TX., daughter-in-law, Berniece Talkington of Newcastle; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Bill Dill of Chickasha; brother, Leonard Otey of Cement; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Imogene Otey of Anadarko; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. Interment will be in the Verden Cemetery under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home. |

Stricken about ten days ago with typhoid fever from which complications developed and the weakened constitution was unable to stand the strain. Funeral services were conducted from the M. Warburton sang 'No Night There,' 'Beyong The Sunset' and 'Rock of Ages,' accompanied by Mrs. Donald Brown. Mildred Louise Talkington was born August 14, 1911 in Verden, Oklahoma and passed away in the Anadarko Hospital September 4, 1960. Miss Talkington had been in poor health for several years. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God. Survivors are three brothers, Will Talkington of Hydro, Sam and Fred Talkington of Verden, and four sisters, Mrs. Rose Dodson of Okla. City, Mrs. Susie Frick and Mrs. Cora Fowler of Verden and Mrs. Inez Smith of Lindsay and a host of other relatives and friends.
