© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma 17 October 1919 William Reid Died at the home of his son George, in our city at 6 o'clock Friday morning, William Reid, age 72 years 2 months and 29 days. Born in the state of Illinois where he grew to manhood and was married October 15, 1868 to Miss Sarah Materson. To this union was born four boys, Maurice, Wilbert, George and Lenord, all of whom were living at the time of his death and with the exception of Wilbert, who is living in Indianapolis, Indiana, were present when he died. The subject of this narrative was a pioneer of our state, having come here in the fall of 1889 just after the country had been opened for settlement. He was a man of generous impulses and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. The stranger, even though a begger, never failed to find food and shelter if he sought it at his hands, and he was at home by the bedside of the sick and delighted in all kind and neighborly offices. He bore adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly. He filled the various relations of life as son, husband, father, brother and friend and filled them well. We can do more? But he is gone; His spirit has gone out upon the waves; the waves that roll on and on and never return to our shores. Another name is stricken from the rolls of our old settlers and his surviving loved ones alone are left to attest how sadly they will miss him. His life work is done and well done and having passed his alloted time and wearied with life's duties and cares, weary of suffering and waiting, he lay down to rest. Suffice it to say, he lived nobly and died peacefully. A life long Christian, the stern Reaper found him "as a shock of corn fully ripe for the harvest." Not for him our tears, rather let us crown his grave with garlands; few of us will live as long, or as well, and fewer will the Angel of Death greet with such a loving touch. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock p. m., Rev. James of Chickasha officiating, he was laid to rest in our silent city of our dead beside the faithful wife and mother who preceded him about six years ago. To his sorrowing friends we extend our deepest sympathy. |
