Izora Elizabeth Phillips McWhorter

Mrs. Izora Elizabeth Phillips McWhorter was born in Butts county, GA, September 6, 1846 and died in Verden, Oklahoma, September 10, 1936. Age 90 years and four days.

Mrs. McWhorter professed faith in Christ as the age of eleven years and united with the Methodist church South.

On December 24, 1869 she was united in marriage with Mr. Paul Thomas McWhorter in Atlanta, Georgia.

Her husband responded to a call to preach early in life, and in 1878 he joined the Alabama Conference of the Methodist church South. Sister McWhorter gladly accepted her lot as the wife of a traveling preacher and served the church in that capacity in Alabama, Arkansa and Oklahoma. One half of their active ministry was spent as pioneers in Western Oklahoma, a ministry which called for a self denial and a sacrifice little known to most of us who are here today.Mp> On April 14, 1922 Brother McWhorter went away to his final reward leaving sister McWhorter in the care of their children who cared for her as tenderly as a mother could care for her child and there is no doubt but that their tender care added years to the long life which she enjoyed.

Sister McWhorter's body grew weak with the passing of the years but her faith in God remaining strong even to the end of her long and eventful life.

When death came she was in the midst of her five daughters who had ministered to her continually during her long illness.

She leaves six daughters, Mrs. Mary Lamb, Mrs. A. Martinez, Mrs. Maud Hostick, Mrs. Claudia Barrick, Mrs. Edna Wilson and Mrs. Joe Hildebrand, and 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 1 great, great granddaughter, and a host of other relatives and friends who will mourn her departure but they mourn not as those who have no hope.
