Seeptember 3, 1837 ~ February 4, 1914

Aged Veteran Dies Suddenly

Wednesday morning about 9:30 as Joseph Gravenhorst, aged 77, in company with his step granddaughter, Mrs. Mason, were on their way to the station to board the passenger train for Fort Cobb, Mr. Gravenhorst was suddenly stricken with heart failure from which he died a short time later.

They were just across the track north of the City hotel when Mr. Gravenhorst suddenly reeled and fell.

Medical aid was immediately summoned and he was removed to the office of Dr. Jones in the Rockefeller hotel where he died a few minutes after his arrival.

Deceased was a native of Germany and came to America in 1860.

In 1861 he inlisted in the army as a private and later was raised to the rank of lieutenant in Company A, 37th Illinois infantry.

At the time of his death he was a member of the soldiers' home at Leavenworth, Kansas, and was visiting his relatives here and at Fort Cobb, being absent from the home on a furlough.

Mr. and Mrs. Mendenhall of Ft. Cobb were immediately notified and they arrived here Wednesday evening. Deceased was a step-father of Mrs. Mendenhall.

Funeral services were conducted from the residence Thursday afternoon by Elder J. B. Raines and the remains were laid to rest in the Verden cemetery.
