David William Craddock
March 2, 1844 ~ April 27, 1913

Death again invaded our midst this week and summoned our citizen, David W. Craddock to the Great Beyond. He died at his home Sunday afternoon, April 27, at 3 o'clock, after an illness of several months, of cancer of the liver, aged 69 years.

David W. Craddock was born in Hart county, Kentucky, in 1884. He served in the Union army during the civil war and enlisted in Company A, 37th Kentucky Infantry in 1862, and later he was transferred to Company I, 30th Kentucky Calvary where he served to the close of the war.

In 1867 he was married to Miss Laura J. Carby in Grayson county, Ky. To this Union eight children were born, four of whom, together with his wife still survive him, two boys John and Lon, and two daughters, Mrs. Uriah Freed and Mrs. Lizzie Gallaway. Five brothers and two sisters are still living. Two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Hawkins and Mrs. Belle Graston are both residing in Grayson county, Kentucky; four brothers are living in Hart county, Kentucky and one brother George Craddock, is in Caddo, Oklahoma.

In 1888 he removed to Kansas, and lived in that state until 1897, when they came to Oklahoma and located in Lincoln county. In 1908 he came to Verden where he made his home until the time of his death. In the spring of 1911 he was elected marshal of the town of Verden, which position he held for five months, giving his best efforts to the work.

David W. Craddock was a man of strong convictions, a firm advocate and worker for the ideals of his faith in all phases of life, religious and social; always contending for the abolition of wrong; a lover of the young and weak, a kind and affectionate husband and father, and a citizen of sterling worth, in whose untimely death this community lost a worker whose demise is felt with keen sorrow in the homes of this neighborhood.

The funeral was held at the residence Monday afternoon, Rev. P. F. Harman of the Baptist church delivering the sermon and the remains were laid to rest in the Verden cemetery by the I. O. O. F. lodge of Verden of which order he has been a member for many years.

The News joins in extending sympathy to the widow and family in their sad bereavement.

Laura J. Corby was born in Gracen county, Kentucky, September 12, 1843; was married to David W. Craddock Dec. 12, 1867, to which union there were born five boys and three girls, of whom three are still living, John W. Craddock, living seven miles north of town, Alonzo Craddock of Tulsa and Mrs. J. A. Galloway of Los Angeles, Calif.

Together with her husband and family she came to Oklahoma in 1893, and to Caddo CO., in 1902.
Wed 12/Dec/1867 She with her husband moved to Verden where she lived until her death which occurred September 14, her husband having departed this life in 1913.

It was just before the awakening of another day, just as the hour had reached three o'clock Thursday morning September 14, she went to sleep like a tired child. So peaceful were the last hours that the patient watchers hardly realized the end had came. After a long, busy and useful life she died as she had lived - honored, trusted and loved. She reared her own monument while she lived, in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was completed, if work all done and well done constitute completion. Her Christian life was beautiful from its begining to the close, and through all the viscissitudes and sorrows that are met in life, her faith in God never wavered. But she has left us and today the autumn leaves fall upon another grave that hides from our sight all that is mortal of a true and noble woman. It was here that the last and best days of her life were spent and when her last hour came and the God of eternity called her to her everlasting rest, it was her desire that beside her departed companion in our silent city on its sloping hillside, surrounded by the beauty, happiness and contentment of our people, where the flowers are sweetest and the birds warble their most melodious songs, should be the eternal resting place of all that was mortal of her.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, at the Methodist church, Rev. Chas. Mann officiating. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful. The pallbearers were chosen from members of the I. O. O. F. in honor of her departed husband who was a member of that lodge.

George Alexander Craddock
November 25, 1856 ~ December 28, 1928

George A. Craddock was born in Bonnyville, Kentucky, on Nov. 25, 1856, and departed this life December 28, 1928; at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 3 days.

He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Willis, September 8, 1889, and to this union were born eight children, all living.

In the passing of this pioneer a life, energetic, unselfish, and kind has closed. Of that stock was George A. Craddock, and such lives are worthy of emulation. His friends and neighbors will ever remember his kindness and help to the needy.

At the age of 25 years, he joined the Methodist church. The flowers were many and beautiful; Mrs. Frank DuBois sang his favorite song, "Beckoning Hands," and he was laid to rest in the Verden cemetery.

January 18, 1943 ~ November 9, 2013

J.W. Craddock, 70, of Apache, was born January 18, 1943 near Anadarko, Oklahoma to Van Edwin and Lucille Marie [Archer] Craddock. He passed from this life on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at his residence south of Apache, Oklahoma.

Jay left home at a young age. He was a good man and a hard worker.

In 1975, at the age of 32, he gave his life to the Lord. His enthusiasm for fun and life didn't fade; it was redirected. He loved to share his faith.

He loved playing and telling jokes, loved to sing and play his guitar, fix old cars, and loved to fish but most of all he just loved. He was a good, loving father and husband and always put family first.

As a young man Jay learned the craft of telephone cable splicing. Even more than a way to provide for his family, he considered his work to be an art and those he worked for and with would agree. If it wasn't perfect he wasn't finished. He took much pride in his work and was greatly admired by his peers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Van and Lucille; 3 brothers, Leonard, Reginald, and Lonnie; and 1 sister, Ada.

Survivors include his wife Viola of the home; 6 children; Sheila and her husband Tony Mayer of Cyril, Ok., Douglas and his wife Sherry Craddock of Ft. Cobb, Ok., Angela Rose Cary of Oklahoma City, Ok., Lou Ann and her husband Chase Wright of Monticello, Wis., Kevin and his wife Janice Olinger of Atoka, Ok., and Rodney Craddock and fiancee Erin Frazee of Montgomery, Tx. 14 grandchildren; Madi, Makenzie, Justin, DJ, Krista, Brittany, Logan, Quintin, Jaxon, Brett, Whitney, Shelby, Tara, and Tyson, 14 great grandchildren; Joshua, Mike, Autumn, Winter, Elijah, Abby, Aubrey, Desteni, Jaden, Dlain, Levi, Talli, Alysa, and Charlee; 5 brothers; Onis and his wife Peggy of Greenville, Ohio, Paul and his wife Carolyn of Napoleon, Ohio, David and his wife Gay of Tampa, Florida, Dan and his wife BJ of Ft. Cobb, Ok., Larry and his wife Samie of Anadarko, Ok., and Joe and his wife Debbie of Binger, Ok., and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Anadarko with Pastor Clay Hicks from Erin Springs Baptist Church in Lindsey, Ok. officiating. Burial will follow in the Verden Cemetery in Verden, Ok. under the direction of the Steverson Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at www. steversonfuneralhome.com.
