Essa Jane "Essie" [Paul] Bruce
August 28, 1871 ~ May 29, 1934

Essa Jane Bruce was born August 28, 1871 in Kentucky; she departed from this earth Tuesday morning at 4:20 o'clock, May 29, 1934 at her home in Verden.

She was 62 years, 9 months and 1 day at her passing. Mrs. Bruce became seriously ill seven weeks ago when she was stricken with paralysis, but for years had been in declining health.

None ever entered her home without feeling the warmth of a genuine hospitality. Disease did not destroy the charm of a kind indulgent disposition, she was always ready to lend a helping hand in time of need ~ both in acts of kindness and in words. She had always a smile and a pleasant word for her friends.

Vain is any attempt to measure the loss of a mother to her children; after all the poets have sung and lovers dreamed, outside of heaven there is no love like mother-love.

At the age of 22, she was united in marriage to Clifford Beckenridge Bruce and to this union 8 children were born, 5 of which are still living; they are: Gilbert Paul Bruce of Anadarko, Russel and Roy Bruce of Verden, Mrs. Allyne Sanford of Lincoln, Nebr., and Mrs. Hazel Duvoll of Anadarko. Besides her husband and children she leaves one brother, T. W. Paul of Kingfisher, three neices, Mrs. Lee Pile, Mrs. Frieda Aiken and Mrs. Grace Quiggins all of Kingfisher; 5 nephews, Carl Piarns, Lee Bill Buttler and P. M. Paul, all of Oklahoma City, other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. Bruce has been a consecrated Christian for many years, was converted and joined the Baptist church on October 12, 1903. Since 1922 she has attended the Assembly of God church of which she was a regular attendant until ill health forced her to stay at home.

The funeral was held at 3:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the family home with Rev. Roy Steiger of Anadarko officiating. Interment was made in the Verden cemetery.

Roy C. Bruce
November 25, 1903 ~ May 9, 1937

Roy Bruce, former young man of our little town was accidently killed in an automobile accident Sunday night near Parker, Arizona. His wife was severly hurt with a head injury which may prove fatal according to radio announcements.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bruce moved to Parker about eight months ago where Roy had secured work with Wickes Construction Company, builders of a new bridge across the Colorado river. Mr. Kramer, another employee was killed while Mrs. Bruce and Stephen Dobbs suffered head injuries.

The accident happened near Parker when their light car and a heavier one driven by a family of Mexicans collided.

Relatives here left Monday for Parker to bring the body here for burial which will not probably arrive before today, Friday. Burial will take place beside the mother and sisters in Verden cemetery.

Roy was reared in Verden having won the admiration of the community by his pleasant disposition to his fellow man. He was a boy who never tired of seeing after his invalid mother who passed away about four years ago. After her passing he married and had resided here and at Oklahoma City before securing work at Parker.

Those left to mourn his departure are his wife, two sisters, Mrs. Allene Sanford of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Hazel Duvall of Anadarko, brothers Russel and Jack Bruce of Verden, his father, C. B. Bruce of Verden.
