July 1949 Isaac Mansfield Ussery Gospel preacher and debater. "Issac [Isaac] M. Ussery was born in Madison County, Tennessee in 1869. His father moved to Northeast Arkansas in 1897, where Isaac grew to manhood. At the age of 17, he joined the Methodist church and remained in it until he heard and obeyed the gospel ten years later. He was then 27. In 1898, over the protest of his father, brother, and friends, he began preaching the simple, pure, gospel of Christ. In 1892 he married Miss Josie Rouse. In 1906 he was called by the church of Christ in his boyhood home community where his father lived to conduct a series of meetings. During the meeting October 12, 1906, on the fifty-seventh birthday of his father, Bro. Ussery baptized him into the Kingdom of Christ. Bro. Ussery's brother was baptized with him and the next day he baptized his half-sister. The father had been a member of the Methodist church for thirty years, and his brother a member for ten years. Bro. Ussery was a very successful preacher and debater. In 1904 he engaged in a debate with A. A. Nunnery and had twenty additions as a result of the discussion. He engaged In numerous other debates. In 1912 he was living In Farmersville, Texas." -- Boyd E. Morgan, Arkansas Angels, p. 46. From his great-grandson, Stephen Ussery: "Around 1919, he moved his family to Rush Springs, OK, from where he based his evangelistic efforts. He was fairly well known in the Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma region. One of his sermons was entitled "A Congregation of Birds." He also operated a merchantile store in Rush Springs and was involved in community projects." |
