November 1940 Martha [Nichols] Mowdy Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. J.W. Mowdy Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Missionary Baptist Church by the pastor, Rev. J.E. Fender. The program of songs consisted of "Abide with Me," "There Is a Fountain Filed with Blood," and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased. They were: Bronell Mowdy, Leon Hayes, Alvie Mowdy, Roy Peters, Ray Mowdy, and John Mowdy. Flower girls were: Letrice Sparks, May Dell Mowdy, Mildred Burton, Madeline Mayfield, all granddaughters of Mrs. Mowdy, and Lillian and Juanita Bonner. Mrs. Mowdy was born January 23, 1865 in Dallas, Arkansas to Lavander and Mary [Grigsby] Nichols. On July 5, 1883, she was married to John W. Mowdy. She became a member of the Missionary Baptist Church in 1884. Mrs. Mowdy had been in ill health for several years. Her condition had been serious for some time. She died at her home here Monday evening at 7 o'clock at the age of 75 years, 9 months, and 18 days. She leaves her husband; three sons, Lewis of Alex, Jim of Rush Springs, and Marion of Marlow; three daughters, Mrs. Alice Peters of Lindsay, Mrs. Dosha Davidson of San Jose, California, and Mrs. Hazel Hayes of Rush Springs; 20 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. All were present for the funeral except Mrs. Davidson of California. Interment was in the Rush Springs Cemetery. |
