Velma Lee [Miller] Burges

Funeral services for Velma Lee Burges, 84, of Rush Springs, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at the Southern Baptist Church with Rev. Elmer Whitehead officiating.

Velma Lee Burges was born December 15, 1916, in Ninnekah, to Arch Miller and Annie (Boswell) Miller, and died Monday, September 24, 2001, at Grady Memorial Hospital.

She married Arthur G. Burges November 17, 1934, in El Reno, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on July 22, 1960.

Velma was a resident of California for 35 years and a Rush Springs resident for 50 years, graduating with the Ninnekah High School Class of 1934. She was a office clerk and a member of the Southern Baptist Church, Rush Springs.

She is preceded in death by 1 daughter, LaDonna Davis, and 1 granddaughter, Patricia Gail Grace.

Survivors include: daughter: Ramona McGuire and husband Brad, of Lancaster, CA; son: Leon Burges and wife Karen, of Rush Springs; 2 brothers: Tom Miller, of Terrell, TX, and Bill Miller, of Ft. Worth, TX; sister: Edith Williams, of Bakersfield, CA; 7 grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.

Interment will be in the Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel.

Leon Burges
Sept. 15, 1937 - Dec. 16, 2011


Leon Burges, age 74, of Edmond, passed away Dec. 16, 2011. He was born Sept. 15, 1937, in Chickasha to Arthur Burges and Velma [Miller] Burges. Leon worked 41 years as an educator, from 1961 to 2002. He taught at Stony Point, Cooperton, Middleberg and Amber-Pocasset and served as Grady County Superintendent of Schools.

He liked golf, fishing, playing spades and was a big Red Sox, OU and Thunder fan. He loved spending the holidays with family and friends. He loved being a Papa Leon.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Burges, of the home; two sons, Rod Burges, Scott Burges and wife Jana; daughter, Tiffanie Burges; grandson, Brawn Burges; sister, Ramona McGuire and husband Brad; two brothers-in-law, Edward Fitzpatrick and Rick Fitzpatrick and wife Beth; aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 sister LaDonna Davis; and brother-in-law Gerald Fitzpatrick. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Southern Baptist Church of Rush Springs. Interment to follow in Rush Springs Cemetery. Services are under the direction of John Ireland Funeral Home, Moore, OK.
