Resolution of Respect - Whereas, God in his infinite mercy and wisdom has seen fit to remove from the walks of men on November 14, 1912, our friend and brother, William H. Brooks, an honored and consistent member of Rush Springs Lodge No. 7, A. F. & A. M. and whereas, he has lived among us the life of an upright citizen, and a man of highest ideals, therefore be it resolved, that in the death of brother William H. Brooks this lodge has sustained an irreparable loss, the family an affectionate father and the community one of its best and most trusted citizens.

Resolved further, that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of this lodge, a copy furnished the press of the city, and a copy sent the family of the deceased brother.

Letha Elizabeth [Cobb] Douthit Brooks

Letha Elizabeth Brooks, 90, died Thursday, December 14, 2000 in Marlow Manor Nursing Home, Marlow.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 16 in the First Assembly of God Church of Rush Springs with Bro. Eugene Howeth officiating. Music was by Sandra Page and Sonjia Dalrymple.

Burial was in Rush Springs Cemetery under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brooks was born March 28, 1910, in Greenville, Texas, the daughter of Issiac Wilburn Cobb and Viola [Long] Cobb.

She and Jack Douthit were married September. 27, 1924 in Duncan. He preceded her in death. She then married to Tom Brooks Oct 7, 1950, in Chickasha. He died October 19, 1977.

She came to Oklahoma in 1913 in a covered wagon.

She attended Cement schools and was a resident of Rush Springs since 1955.

She was a retired home health care worker and a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Rush Springs.

She was preceded in death by two son, Jack Douthit and Paul Clifford Douthit; one brother, J D Cobb; and one sister, Eual Plowman.

Survivors include two sons, Melvin Douthit and his wife Jeanie of Rush Springs, and Thomas Lester Brooks, Jr and his wife Margaret of Ada; two daughters, Corene Swanson and Marlow and Lorene Alaniz and her husband E J of Marlow; A sister, Willie Mae Douthit of Rush Springs; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Randall Harris, Mark Dalrymple, Billy Pittman, Gene Bratcher, Bill Page, Deon Duke, Honorary pallbearer, Jim Norton.

Dr. Gene Brooks, D.M.E.

Dr. Gene Brooks of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2007.

Born June 15, 1936, on a farm near Rush Springs, Okla., Dr. Brooks led a musical life. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, as well as his Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees from the University of Oklahoma. He completed additional graduate study at the University of Colorado.

Dr. Brooks served as choir director and chairman of the music departments at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, and Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He also chaired the Department of Music at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.

Dr. Brooks received the 1985 Profile in Excellence Award from Oklahoma Baptist University and the 1996 Distinguished Alumni Award in Music from Oklahoma Baptist University. In 1997, he received the University of Oklahoma School of Music Distinguished Alumni Fellow Award. He also served as minister of music for numerous churches in Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado.

Choirs under Dr. Brooks' direction appeared in concerts throughout the United States, including Carnegie Hall in New York City. They also performed at the National Convention of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) and state conventions of the Oklahoma Music Educators Association. One of his choirs was selected to appear at the Choral Symposium in Vienna, Austria, sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association. In addition to performing Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in Vienna, the choir toured France, Germany, and Austria. Another of Dr. Brooks' choirs was chosen to perform at the National Convention of MENC (Music Educators National Conference). In addition, the Singing Texans, a show choir under his direction, presented twenty-five concerts on a U.S.O. tour of the Caribbean.

In 1977, Dr. Brooks became the National Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association and continued to serve in that position until his death. Prior to assuming his position as ACDA National Executive Director, Dr. Brooks served ACDA in other capacities, including ACDA National Treasurer, Program Chair for the ACDA National Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri, and Chairman of the ACDA Division Convention held in Dallas, Texas.

In addition to ACDA, Dr. Brooks held numerous positions in other music organizations. He served as the Secretary General for the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM). He served as Chairman of Music in Higher Education for MTNA. In addition, MTNA named him as its national choral chairman. Dr. Brooks also held numerous positions at the state, division, and national levels in MTNA, MENC, and ACDA.

Dr. Brooks is survived by his wife Nancy, of Edmond, Oklahoma; son, Steven, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister Linda Smith and husband Brunell of Marlow, Oklahoma; brother Orvil Brooks and wife Bonnie of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and sister Virginia Huffine and husband Alton of Pottsboro, Texas, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dr. Brooks is preceded in death by parents Frank and Ethel Brooks, and sister Evelyn Lancaster and husband Harley of Duncan, Oklahoma.

The family will hold visitation on Friday, July 27, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Guardian Funeral Homes North Chapel, 11600 North Pennsylvania Avenue, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Funeral Services will be held at First Baptist Church Oklahoma City, 1201 North Robinson, Oklahoma City, Okla., on Saturday, July 28, 2007, at 11 a.m. with interment to follow at 2:30 p.m. at Rush Springs Cemetery in Rush Springs, Okla.
