Clarence Elon Snell
Funeral services for Clarence Elon Snell, 79, of Chickasha, will be held Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at 10 a.m. in the First Christian church with Reverend Gary Bell officiating. Snell was born March 2, 1920, in Anadarko, the son of James R. Snell and Ida Johnson Snell. He died Thursday Feb. 17, 2000 at home in Chickasha.
Snell came to Chickasha with his parents as a child and attended Chickasha Public Schools, graduating from Chickasha High School. While in school Clarence was awarded student of the year at age 12. In high school he was captain of the basketball team and played football and ran track.
He married Evelyn F. Sanford on Dec. 1, 1939.
Clarence served in the United States Army during World War II in the 12th armored Division.
After being honorably discharged from the U. S. Army, Clarence went to work for the Railway Express as an agent later becoming the manager for the Abilene office, where he retired in 1985, after 35 years of service.
While living in Abilene, Clarence served on the Abilene Chamber Of Commerce, a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Clarence had served as a Boy Scout leader and served on the Scout Council for many years.
After his retirement in 1985, Clarence returned to Chickasha, where he served on the Chickasha School Board from 1990 to 1995 and was president of the School Board from 1993 to 1994. He was an active member of the Chickasha Lions Club and American Legion. Clarence also was a member of the First Christian church, where he had served as a deacon.
Clarence worked with many civic events around Chickasha.
He was preceded in death by both parents, two brothers, James and Rollie Snell and one sister, Dorothea Hill. His wife Evelyn also preceded him in death on November 24, 1983.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Larry Swanson, of Nashua, New Hampshire; Marcia and Earl Rutter, of Mansfield, Texas; Janett and Roy Franklin, of Emory, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Margaret Snell, of Chickasha' one sister Jane Thomas, of Chickasha; eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian church, 202 South 6th, Chickasha, Oklahoma, 73018.
Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home
Note: Clarence was a grandson of Alfred Joe and Jane [Fitzpatrick] Johnson
