Lavelle [McCaughtry] Sandford

Funeral service to celebrate and honor this loving and generous woman, Lavelle McCaughtry Sandford, will take place Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 1:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Sevier Funeral Home, Chickasha.

Lavelle McCaughtry Sandford, a native Oklahoman and resident of Albuquerque, NM since 2003, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 17, 2010, just shy of her one-hundredth birthday. Lavelle was born May 8, 1910 on a farm near Ninnekah, Oklahoma. She lived most of her life in Chickasha. She was the daughter of Floyd and Ella McCaughtry. Floyd was a pioneer of the oil boom in Oklahoma. She moved to Chickasha as a child. Thefamily home is a bold, buff brick house still standingat 16 Street & Missouri Avenue. She graduated from the Chickasha High School and was in the class of 1929.

Lavelle attended Oklahoma College for Women. After marriage to William Sandford, she moved to Maryland where they owned and operated a dry-Cleaning business, providing services for the FDR Administration. They retired and returned to Chickasha during the summer of 1968. Lavelle was a member of many women's groups, canasta clubs and the Epworth United Methodist Church.

Lavelle is survived by her niece, Neva King, with whom she lived in Albuquerque. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Sandford in 1968; five siblings, four of Chickasha, OK: Gazelle McCaughtry Garrett, Jack McCaughtery, John McCaughtery and Floyd `Pete' McCaughtery; and one sister, Atha Othella McCaughtry-Rancier of Albuquergue.

Mrs. Sandford's family would like to thank all the special people and friends that helped care for her late in life.

Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Attn: Donor Services, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309.
