Charley Payne was born November 20, 1891, in Indian Territory that was later known as Grady County, Oklahoma. He was the son and youngest child of Mashack Payne and Margaret Elizabeth (Patton) Payne. And he was the only child of this family that was born in Oklahoma, the other nine were born in Chase County, Kansas. His name appears in the family bible as Charley, but it also appears on some records as Charles.

Charley married the first time on 23 March 1912, in Middleberg, Grady Co., Oklahoma, to Laura Emily Willhoit. His brother Logan and wife were the witnesses. Charley and Laura were parents of three children, 2 sons, Gilbert and Eugene, and one daughter, Dorothy.

Charley's wife Laura died January 23. 1920, at their farm in Tabler, Oklahoma, just outside Chickasha, after contracting typhoid fever. Her niece Ruth said Laura's death occurred after she gave birth to her daughter or while her daughter was a baby and Charleyís mother, Margaret E. (Patton) Payne came to stay with Charley and look after his children.

Sometime after Laura's death, Charley married a second time to Bertie Ikard. They later divorced.

It is unknown to this submitter when Charley moved to Washington state. Some family say they think he lived in Oregon too. His niece says he died in Walla Walla, Washington, and another relative said that at one time he lived in Yakima, Washington.

Charley Payne died October 25, 1957, in Walla Walla, Washington, and his body was brought back to Oklahoma for burial beside his first wife Laura. He was buried on October 31, 1957, in Rose Hill Cemetery, in Chickasha, Grady Co., Oklahoma.

His niece Ruth (Ferrell) Ross said her uncle died in Washington state and his body was brought back for burial. She said she went to the funeral at the cemetery in Chickasha.

A lookup found a cemetery deed for Rose Hill Cemetery that was in Laura Payne's name. And the lookup took a photo of the area where this Block and Lot would be which is just a grassy area. There are no headstones for Charley or for his wife Laura.

Submitters note: Thanks to this nice lookup, Helen, some questions got answered about the gravesite, and finding Charley's wife Laura's obituary. There were other Laura Payne's in Grady County. and other Payne families buried at Rose Hill Cemetery who are not related, and for a time created a puzzle. I am glad to have this information so I can write this memorial to Charley and to Laura.
