© The Chickasha Express-Star 25 February 2004 Roy A. Carman Former Chickasha Chief of Police, Roy A. Carman, 85, of Chickasha, died Monday, February 23, 2004, in Norman, OK. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, February 26, 2004, at Rose Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. James Swain, pastor of College Heights Baptist Church will officiate. Roy A. Carman was born on November 30, 1918, in the Friend area and attended Friend schools, graduating in 1936. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942, during World War Two, where he attained the rank of corporal, and was stationed in England, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He and Mabel Looper were married on November 21, 1948. Mr. Carman joined the Chickasha Police Department on November 1, 1948. He received the promotion of captain in 1955, and to Chief of Police in 1956. During his tenure as Chief of Police, he completed many courses in continuous education in police work, at the University of Oklahoma. He served as chief for seventeen years, retiring on April 1, 1973. Roy Carman will be remembered by those who knew him as an honest and caring officer. He would work many hours on the job of law enforcement, and then go straight to his elderly parents farm and spend many more hours on a tractor up into the late hours of the night. He was a wonderful father and will be missed by his children. During his children school years, Mr. Carman served in an executive position with Boy Scouts of America, producing two Eagle Scout sons. He and his wife also held the position of President of the Band Parents Association, having three children participating in band. Mr. Carman was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, A. B. Carman and Florence Effie Carman, two brothers, Glen and Raymond, and three sisters, Cleata Wilburn, Maurine Vanisko and Ruby Carman. He is survived by two sons, Richard, of the home, Roy Lee and wife, Liz, Dallas, TX; a daughter, Jean Carman, Fort Worth, TX; a granddaughter, Trisha Carman; three sisters-in-law, Fran Morris, of Chickasha, Linda Brown, of Oklahoma City and Nadine Butler, of McAlester; and one brother-in-law, Garland Hartling of Chickasha. |
