© Alex Tribune, Alex, Oklahoma Friday, January 21, 1910 Emily J. [Brooks] Bray Mrs. J. H. Bray ~ At half past one o'clock, Sunday, Jan. 9, Mrs. J. H. Bray breathed her last at her home near Alex, Okla. Through her illness had been of long duration the end came suddenly. She was apparently in her usual state of health until Jan. 7, when she showed weakness and sank very rapidly. A physician was called who realized the gravity of the case at once and could offer no hope to the stricken family. Deceased, whose maiden name was Emily Brooks, was born in North Carolina 1835, was married to J. H. Bray in 1853. Moved to Tennessee in 1860 and to Arkansas in 1879, and thence to Oklahoma in 1908. She seemed delighted with the New State and for a while grew better in health. She lived a consistent member of the Baptist church from early life until a few years ago, when she united with the Methodist church. She leaves an aged husband, eight children, nine grand-children, six great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends to mourn her loss. The children who survive her are Mrs. Adelaide Neely of Ft. Smith, Ark., Mrs. John Carroll of Charleston, Ark., John, Charles, Wesley, Walter and Mary Bray, near Alex, and Joe Bray of Stigler Okla. Three children had passed to the Great Beyond, an infant, buried at the old home in N. C.; Decie, 4 yrs. Old, buried at Ashville, N. C.; and the first Mrs. Carroll, buried at Charleston, Ark. Of a large family only a brother and sister survive her, Mrs. E. P. Stinson of Greenwood, Ark., and T. F. Brooks of Jackson, Tenn. All her children were around her bedside except Mrs. Carrol and Joe Bray. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Flanagin, pastor of M. E. church at Alex. The burial took place in the Odd Fellows cemetery at Chickasha at 3 p.m., Jan. 10. The husband and children desire to thank the many friends who so generously assisted them during the last hours of their beloved one, and also after she had gone. |
