Chickasha, Oklahoma January 2017 October 10, 1917 ~ January 17, 2017 Funeral service for Hazel Lorea McCombs, age 99 of Chickasha, Oklahoma, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2017 in the Epworth United Methodist Church. Hazel was born in Waurika, Oklahoma on October 10, 1917 to Frank and Alta Smith. She was the 8th of 10 children, all now deceased. She was married to Homer McCombs for 36 years prior to his death in 1974. She will be greatly missed by her children, Alice [Jim] Birdsill of Grand Junction, CO; Mike [Linda] McCombs of Lake Saint Louis, MO; Pat [Lily] McCombs of Euless, TX; and Dan McCombs of Vian, OK. She leaves eight grandchildren, as well as eight great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Hazel loved family gatherings, and she planned and enjoyed numerous family reunions, birthday celebrations, holidays and vacations. She was briefly married to Hugh Coulter, who died in 1982. A graduate of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in 1967, Hazel was an elementary school teacher, with the last three years of her career devoted to the Chickasha school system. An avid traveler, Hazel toured all 50 states, Mexico and Canada. Later her travel experiences included trips to a variety of countries throughout the world. She loved her home in Chickasha, which she named Mockingbird Hill, and she spent many hours nurturing her flowers and garden. Hazel spent her life focused on serving where there as a need. An active member of Epworth United Methodist Church, she served in many leadership roles, including Health and Welfare Chairperson, President of the Wedding Ring Class, and President of the United Methodist Women. Members of the Yet Set will recall the many bus trips that Hazel coordinated. She was an eager volunteer for field mission work in various countries, including Mexico, the Philippines and South Texas. Her volunteer work extended to Grady Memorial Hospital where she served for more than 50 years working in the Gift Shop. Hazel was also a charter member of Mobile Meals volunteers, a member of Democrat Women's Organization of Grady County, the Chickasha Delphian Club and the Floribunda Flower Club. She was named Pi Chapter's Woman of the Year in 1986, an honor bestowed upon a woman who has contributed greatly to her community. Interment will be in the Pocasset Cemetery. Service will be under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Epworth United Methodist Church of Chickasha or the charity of one's choice.
