Josie [Unruh] Smith

Josie Unruh Smith was born January 24, 1931, to Ed ward and Ada Nightingale Unruh at Verden, Oklahoma. She peacefully passed away on July 11, 2016, at St. Anthony South Kindred Hospital, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, reaching the age of eighty-five years.

She grew up on the family farm south of Verden, spending many happy hours there with her three brothers and one sister.

She received her education at the Sandlin School, walking the mile across the pasture with her siblings and neighbor children.

At the age of twelve years, she realized her lost condition, upon repentance and a new birth experience, she was baptized by her father into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, on February 28, 1943. Josie remained faithful to her vows until her end. Although she seldom spike of the deep feelings of her heart, it was evident she had a quiet faith that carried her through life.

The Lord continued to bless her life and prepared the neighbor boy, Darvin Smith, as a companion to her. They were joined in marriage March 26, 1952, by her father at Verden, Oklahoma. They shared sixty-four beautiful years together. Their first home was on a farm west of Chickasha, Oklahoma, where they remained all their married life. They worked together to make a living and later added a dairy where Josie continued to work side by side with her husband. They eventually sold the dairy and continued with the wheat farming and cattle.

Mom was a homemaker at heart and found a special joy in cooking, cleaning, gardening and tending her beaufiful flower beds. One daughter and two sons were born to this union. As the children grew up and were married she welcomed their spouses into her heart as well. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were all dear to her.

In the fall of 2015, when her health failed and she was no longer able to remain at home, she moved to Arbor House in Mustang,Oklahoma. She was lovingly cared for there for the next nine months. As her health continued to deteriorate, she was moved to Kindred Hospital where she resided until her passing. Although it makes us sad to say goodbye, we are grateful she has been relieved of her suffering. We look forward to meeting her in Heaven.

Those left behind are her husband, Darvin; one daughter, Barbara and Phillip Schmidt; two sons: Charles and Delilah, and Thomas and Denise; ten grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Unruh, and Winnie and Marvin Smith; one brother-in-law, Willis and Geneva Smith, all of Chickasha, Oklahoma.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her parents-in-law, three brothers, one sister, and four additional siblings who died at a young age, two sisters-in-law, and one brother-n-law.

Funeral services were held at the Plainview Mennonite School, Chickasha, Oklahoma, on July 14, 2016. Ministers Carlin Smith, Kyle Ratzloff, and Robert Schmidt officiated.

Burial was in the nearby Plainview Mennonite Cemetery.
