Helena [Jantz] Schmidt Koehn

CHICKASHA, OKLAHOMA ~ Helena Koehn, nee Jantz, daughter of Benjamin and Anna Jantz, was born April 8, 1860, in Poland, Russia. She quietly departed this life March 19, 1947 at the home of her daughter, Lydia, Chickasha, Oklahoma, at the age of 86 years, 11 months, 11 days.

She with her parents immigrated to America in the year of 1874, settling in Pennsylvania for 5 years. Then they moved to McPherson County, Kansas.

In the spring of 1880 Mother joined in marriage with Benjamin H. Schmidt. To this union 13 children were born, 7 daughters and 6 sons. Father departed this life May 10, 1902 at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, having shared life's joys and sorrows together 22 years.

In March 1908 she was joined in marriage with Henry Koehn, who departed this life August 19, 1913, leaving her a widow until death.

Upon the confession of her faith and forgiveness of sins, she was baptized February 22, 1921, becoming a member of the church of God in Christ, Mennonite, remaining a faithful member until death.

Those left to mourn her departure are, 1 brother, Adam Jantz, Burns Kansas; 1 sister, Lizzie Sebrant, Moundridge, Kansas; 7 daughters; Fanny Koehn, Cement, Oklahoma; Minnie Koehn of Enid, Oklahoma; Julia Koehn of Burns, Kansas; Anna Koehn, Cement, Oklahoma; Ella Nightengale of Hutchinson, Kansas; Amanda Koehn, Galva, Kansas; Lydia Koehn, Chickasha, Oklahoma. 2 sons, Daniel Schmidt of Norman, Oklahoma. Mother's life was not a life of ease, yet she withstood the storms of life continuing to be quite active until death. We mourn not as those who have no hope, since she testified of her faith in her Savior. As comforting words Mother said to her daughter Lydia, When I depart, I'm going home.

Funeral services were conducted March 23, in the Plainview Church, Chickasha. Opening remarks and prayer by Min. Ed Unruh. Min. A. T. Koehn spoke from text Rev. 14:13, Job 3:17 and 2 Sam. 12:16-22. Remarks and prayer at the graveside by Min. Eben Nightengale.

Mary F. [Koehn] Schmidt

Mary [Koehn] Schmidt, daughter of Tobias A. Koehn, was born August 15, 1868 in Antanofka, Poland, Russia, and passed away March 19, 1959 at 2:20 P.M. in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ben Jantz. Mother reached the age of 90 years, 7 months and 4 days.

Mother enjoyed fair health until March 1, when she had a heart attack, after which she became about bed fast.

She emigrated with her parents to America during the year 1874, settling in Kansas, where she grew to womanhood. Mother realized her lost condition and through repentance, received forgiveness of sins and was baptized upon her confession of faith and united with the Church of God in Christ (Menno.) in the spring of 1883, and remained faithful until death.

She was united in marriage to Jacob B. P. Schmidt on Dec. 6, 1885, settling on a farm in McPherson County, Kansas. In 1892 they moved to Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. In 1902 they with others came to Chickasha, Oklahoma, where they resided on a farm 6 miles west of town. This union was blest with 7 children. They shared their joys and sorrows of life for 56 years.

Father passed away on Dec. 13, 1941, leaving mother a lonely widow. She made her home with the children until death. She was a kind and loving mother, deeply concerned for her children, often admonishing us to be true and faithful that none might be missing in the family circle in Heaven. She was a great lover of singing and reading the Bible and church literature. She left a faithful testimony that she was ready to meet her Lord for which she was longing. Having the assurance of her faith we expect to meet her on the other side.

She leaves to mourn her departure 2 sons and 3 daughters: William of Burns, Kansas; Joel of Chickasha; Dena (Mrs. Pete Decker) of DeRidder, La.; Hannah (Mrs. Nat. Zeiset) of Chickasha; Emelia (Mrs. Ben Jantz) of Verden; 49 grandchildren; 132 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Her husband, 1 son, and 1 daughter, and six grandchildren preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon March 24, in the Plainview Mennonite Church. Min. Glen Nightengale read Scriptures from Job 14:14; Numbers 23:10; 2 Tim. 4:1-8, and Rev. 14:13, and spoke words of consolation.

The body was laid to rest in the church cemetery.
