Agnes Lee [Welborn] Washum James

NINNEKAH - Agnes Lee Washum James, 84, of Ninnekah died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in Wilkins Nursing Center in Duncan.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Ninnekah Cemetery with the Rev. Johnny Freeman, pastor of the Southern Hills Baptist Church in Chickasha, officiating.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 tonight at the Sevier Funeral Home in Chickasha.

Mrs. James was born June 15, 1916, in a log cabin near Fort Towson, the eldest of 11 children, to Luther Curtis and Ollie Obrenth Cooper Welborn. She married Joe H. Washum Sr. on Nov. 1, 1933, in Chickasha and he preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1964. On Oct. 8, 1974, she married Haskell Jefferson James in Ninnekah and he preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1988.

She reared her family in Ninnekah and all of her children graduated from Ninnekah High School.

Mrs. James retired from the Ninnekah Post Office and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ninnekah.

Each year, she allowed the City of Ninnekah to use her large Eastern Red Cedar tree for the town Christmas tree.

Survivors include two daughters, Mavis Rollins of Chickasha and Shirley Chambless and her husband, Earl, of Duncan; two sons, Joe H. Washum Jr. and his wife, Letha of Duncan and Troy Washum and his wife, Cary, of Seguin, Texas; six sisters, Ange Washum of Martinez, Calif., Ruby Kilgore of Chickasha, Letha Brandt of Chandler, Ariz., Faye Williams of Phoenix, Ariz., Alice Hamman of Mesa, Ariz., and Ruth Brown of Phoenix; three brothers, Ray Welborn of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Calvin Welborn of Coos Bay, Ore., and Carrol Welborn of Queenscreek, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Carolyn Louise Washum in 1951, and Betty Ann Marks in 1983; her parents; and a brother, Curtis Welborn in 1965.
