Phelps aged about 42 years old and his only son, Albert aged 16 was instantly killed Monday afternoon at about 2:30 o'clock while chopping cotton near the Jacob Hunt home northwest of Alex during a thunder shower which came up shortly after the noon hour. The bodies were discovered by C. A. Holder who was returning from Chickasha and brought the news to town and a large crowd soon gathered at the place of death. Mr. Phelps' head was burned and blackened almost beyond recognition, and his clothing torn in shreds, but no marks were found on the boy. The cotton was destroyed for quite a space around where the bodies were discovered. The physicians stated that death was instantaneous. The bodies were brought to the family home and prepared for burial The funeral services conducted by Rev. Coggins, a Free Will Baptist minister of Blanchard, at the family residence, Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock and the bodies were laid to rest in the same grave in the cemetery at Naples. Mr. Phelps is survived by his widow, who is the boy's stepmother, his aged mother, two brothers, O. T. Phelps and R. A. Phelps and one sister, Mrs. B. Browning, all of whom reside in the Alex community. The sympathy of the entire community is with the bereaved ones in this their sad hour of trial. |
