November 6, 1902 George Peter Griswold George Peter Griswold was the eldest son of Benjamin and Eleanor [Stage] Griswold, and was was born in Hartland Township, Livingston County, Michigan. He lived there with his parents until 1853, when they moved to what was then the northern Michigan wilderness of Gilford Township in Tuscola County. On 7 Jan 1861 George went to Denmark Township, about seven miles from Gilford, and enlisted in the Union Army's Company A of the Michigan 14th Infantry Regiment. That unit participated in the Siege of Corinth, Mississippi, drove Confederate guerrillas out of Tennessee, the Siege of Atlanta, and Sherman's March. George was mustered out 14 Mar 1865 in Fayetteville, NC. Back home in Tuscola County he married Zilpha M. French on 7 Jan 1866. Her family was next to the Griswolds in the 1860 census. They moved to Montague County, Texas about 1880 and Oklahoma about the turn of the century. According to the 1910 census Zilpha had given birth to 13 children, eight of which were still living. |
