© Alex Tribune Alex, Oklahoma Friday, July 21, 1916 April 18, 1837 ~ July 15, 1916 S. K. Eliot, an aged farmer and Confederate veteran, north of Naples, was found dead in his field, Saturday afternoon. He had gone out to hor broom corn and when he failed to come in at noon, a sesrch was made and his lifeless body was found where he had dropped from his work. It is presumed that his death is due to the intense heat Stephen had two enlistments in the Confederate Army. His first was as a Private under Capt. William Quayle - Company Mounted Riflemen of Tarrant County, 28th Brigade. He enlisted 17 June 1861. His second enlistment found him serving in Company G of the 15th Texas Cavalry, 2nd Regiment of Johnson's Brigade. He was a Private and bugler with an enlistment date of February 8, 1862. He was captured at Arkansas Post [during battle] on January 11, 1863 and sent as a prisoner of war to Camp Douglas, Illinois. He was released upon swearing to the oath of renunciation and allegiance on March 12, 1863. The oath prevented him from returning to Texas [Confederate territory] until the war ended. Stephen was married to [Serena] Fannie Blue Eliot [reported to be a full-blooded Native American]. They had two sons: William Pinkeyton Eliot [AKA Clarence Barton "Slim" Eliot] and Harvey Keith Eliot. According to a 1910 census, Stephen owned a farm in Brushy, Grady, Oklahoma. His son Harvey was living with Stephen and Fannie and helping with the farm work. Stephen Eliot died of a heart attack while working in a cornfield at the age of 79 in July 1916. |
