Lena Gertrude [Williams] Howard

Funeral service for Lena Gertrude Howard, age 92, of Verden will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2007, in the Verden First Baptist Church. Rev. Johnny Wray will officiate.

Lena Gertrude Williams was born the daughter of Jacob Lafayette Williams and Gracie Angeline Dennis Williams on June 18, 1914, north of Verden. She died at her rural Verden home on April 29, 2007.

Lena grew up north of Verden and attended Fairview School. She moved to Seminole, Oklahoma for a short time, then moved back to the Verden area. On August 27, 1955, she married her husband, Walter Laverne Howard in Las Vegas, Nevada, and they lived in Kermit, TX, Monahans, TX, and Portales, NM. In 1959, she and Laverne moved to their farm north of Verden. Lena and Laverne celebrated 50 years of marriage on August 27, 2005. Lena was a member of the First Baptist Church of Verden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers, and four sisters.

Survivors include: Several Cousins, Nieces, and Nephews.

Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery under the direction of McRay Funeral Home.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Ross Health Care and especially Pat for her devoted care giving.

Viewing will be Monday from 9 am to 8 pm at McRay Funeral Home in Chickasha, then Tuesday and Wednesday at the McRay's Verden Funeral Home in Verden.

Walter Laverne Howard

Funeral service for Walter Laverne Howard, age 85, of Verden will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at the First Baptist Church of Verden. Rev. Johnny Wray will officiate.

Walter Laverne Howard was born the son of Elza Vernon Howard and Sally Elma Robinett Howard on November 30, 1921, in Sidney, Montana. He died on March 6, 2007, in Chickasha.

Laverne grew up and attended school in Seminole, Oklahoma. At the age of 20, he joined the U.S. Marines and served at Midway Island and Okinawa during World War II. After the war, he worked for Mobil Oil in the oilfield.

On August 27, 1955, he married his wife, Lena, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and they lived in Kermit, TX, Monahans, TX, and Portales, NM. In 1959, he and Lena moved to their farm north of Verden where he farmed and ranched. On August 27, 2005, he and Lena celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Laverne was a member of the Verden First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and four sisters.

Survivors include: Wife: Lena of the home; Several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home.
