Andrew Martin Reding
1887 ~ Januaey 15, 1954

Funeral Mass for Andrew Martin Reding, 98, of Chickasha, Oklahoma will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the Holy Name Catholic Church. Wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 10, 2009 at the Sevier Funeral Home Chapel.

Andrew Martin Reding was born on January 15, 1911 to George and Gertrude Reding in Lindsay, Oklahoma. He died July 6, 2009 in Chickasha. Andrew was the oldest son of five children. George Reding moved his family to Chickasha in 1919 locating at Reding Road and North 29th Street.

George wanted his children to receive their education at St. Joseph Academy and attend mass at the Holy Name Catholic Church.

Andrew was eight years old when he drove a wagon and team of horses from Lindsey to Chickasha; while his father George drove the Rock Island Heider Tractor. They left Lindsay at daybreak and drove into Chickasha after dark.

Andrew and his father helped construct the Holy Name Catholic Church. One of Andrew's favorite stories was when "Papa" told him to climb up and help place the pegs into the structure that would support the beams of the church. Climbing to that height frightened him so much that he could only put in one peg. Andrew enjoyed pointing out that peg to anyone interested.

Andrew enjoyed telling the story of how he and J.C. Schlecht would often race their mule teams to see who could move the most dirt in one day as the basement of the church was being dug out. Andrew also hauled the bricks from the depot to the church with the help of his team of horses and wagon.

Andrew was very active in the Catholic Church. He was one of the first ushers and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. As a 4th degree Knight he helped cook and serve many meals at the Knights of Columbus Hall. He enjoyed being a member of the Knights bowling league and helped his team win many sportsmanship awards in the 80's.

Andrew grew up working on the family farm, raising cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens and growing small grains and alfalfa. He was the first Farm Bureau Insurance Agent in Grady County and later turned the business over to Bill Bullard. When not farming Andrew had odd jobs and enjoyed telling the story about how he saw Line Creek flooding Chickasha Avenue. He was working on a window display at the Dixie when the creek burst its bank and flooded downtown. In 1936 Andrew purchased 200 acres of land from his father, east of the original Reding homestead. Over the years he erected a red silo, three barns, and a road that connected the land from 29th street to 4th street, now known as Reding Road.

He married Mary Frances Novotny in 1946 and began building a brick home in which to raise his family. Together Andrew and Mary raised four children, Martin, Jerry, Carlene and Frances. His children grew up knowing farm life and were active in the 4H program in which Mary and Andrew were 4H leaders. His children attended St. Joseph Academy and Chickasha Public Schools. Andrew and Mary made sure that each of their children received a college education.

Andrew and Mary were active in the community of Chickasha hosting school field trips to their farm. In 1970 the Reding family became the Farm Family of the year in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the growth and progress of Oklahoma Agriculture. Andrew and his family exhibited many items in the Grady County Fair each year winning many ribbons and awards. Several times Andrew's alfalfa hay won awards at the State Fair.

Andrew Reding lived a long productive life. He was no stranger to hard work and continued to work his fields to the age of 86.

His mind contained a wealth of information which he shared with his children, grandson, nieces and nephews and anyone that came along who was interested in listening to him, which was many. He had a wonderful sense of humor. "Andy" touched many lives and he will be missed but not forgotten.

Andrew was preceded in death by his wife Mary Frances [Novotny] Reding March of 1998, his parents George and Gertrude Reding, his grandparents Hubert and Magdalena Reding of Oklahoma City, 3 aunts and 6 uncles, his brother Henry, sister-in-law Helen, brother Norbert, sister Gertrude and brother-in-law Antone and nephews Walter and Hubert Dobry, sister Dorothy and brother-in-law Joe and nephew Dennis Boyden of Michigan. Andrew Martin Reding is survived by two sons Martin Reding, Jerry Reding and daughter-in-law Nancy [Cook] Reding of Chickasha, two daughters Carlene Reding Carpenter and son-in-law Bud Carpenter of Mounds, Oklahoma and Frances Reding of Chickasha, one grandson Nicholas Reding of Scottsdale, Arizona and many nieces and nephews who will miss their "Uncle Andy".

Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
