Dr Johnnie Ben "John" Minnett
April 6, 1929 ~ April 4, 2014

Dr Johnnie Ben "John" Minnett, of Chickasha, OK, died on April 4, 2014. Services will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Chickasha 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday April 8.

A rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2014, at the Sevier Funeral Home.

Dr Minnett was born in Chickasha on April 6, 1929, to Henry & Norma [Collins] Minnett.

Dr Minnett was a practicing Optometrist in the Air Force during the Korean War and then in Chickasha for over 50 years.

He was devoted to his profession serving on the Board of the Oklahoma Optometric Association and was the Chairman of the Southwest Contact Lens Society.

He was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church, where he participated in the Knights of Columbus, served on the Church Board and was Lay Minister.

As an active member of the Chickasha community, Dr. Minnett served multiple terms on the Chickasha School Board, was a member of AMBUCS and most recently, the Lions Club. He was also a member of the Grady County Historical Society and Grady County Mineral Owners.

John was always ready to help. Besides local charities, Dr. Minnett made many mission trips to Mexico to examine eyes and to fit the glasses that were collected by the Lions Club.

He was a familiar figure in Chickasha, always having a smile and kind word. Often there would be a joke to go with the smile.

He rarely missed an event in which his children, grandchildren or even great-grandchildren were involved.

He is survived by his wife, Bettye, whom he married in Memphis, TN in 1950. He is survived by son, Bill Minnett and wife Karna, of Houston, TX; daughter, Mita Bates and husband Bob, of Ardmore; a son-in-law, Randal Polk, of Oklahoma City; and a sister, Jule Sewell, of Denton, TX.

He was preceded in death by a daughter - Jeanne Polk; as well as two of his sisters, Gail Justis and Mita Ehn. John had ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

His friends and his jokes are legion. If you didn't know him, you missed out!

Interment will be in the Holy Name Section of Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Chickasha Mobile Meals or The Lions Club of Chickasha.
