© Alex Tribune Alex, Oklahoma August 16, 1929 December 8, 1842 ~ August 8, 1929 "In Memoriam - another of the pioneer citizens of Alex and one in the ranks who fought in the defense of the union of our country was lade to rest in peace in the quiet little cemetery at Valley View, near Naples last Friday, as members of his family and friends paid the last honors to his frail form as it was consigned to mother earth to await the judgment. David Crockett Smith or "Grandpa Smith" as he was known to all in this community was born in Vermillion county, Indiana in 1841. He served with the northern forces in defense of the union of his country during the Civil War, and was a member of the G. A. R., the membership of which is fast thinning as one by one the old soldiers are passing. He was united in marriage with Miss Louise Hill in 1869. To this union were born two children, who survive him. In 1884 he came to Oklahoma, settling in the section now known as Grady county, where he had since made his home. For the last 20 years he had lived with his daughter and for the last 10 or 12 years had lived in Alex. In 1892 he confessed Christ his savior and united with the Christian church and has always lived an exemplary life. He was kind and considerate, never in any way offending those with whom he came in contact. He was always cheerful and loved to be near his friends hence he was often found sitting in his chair on the streets when the weather permitted or in some store, where he could greet all who came by. He had been a member of the Masonic lodge for 51 years and for the last five years had been on the honorary roll of both the Masonic and Rebekah lodges. To know him was to love and respect him and even the children of the town looked upon him as their friend and were glad to do him any favor. While a semi-invalid for a long time he was able to sit in his chair in his room or on the porch at his home and was sitting on his porch greeting his friends only the evening before the end came. He was taken ill late in the evening and quietly closed his eyes in death on Thursday morning August 8, 1929, at 10:35 o'clock, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 8 days. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Friday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. F. D. Grover of Minco, who paid high tribute to his worthy life. Beautiful flowers presented by lodges, friends and relatives attested to his standing in the community. The services were concluded at the cemetery by the Masonic order in which rites he was consigned to the earth. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. A. A. Hale, one son, C. L. Smith, of Anadarko, six grand children and three great grand children. |
