James Hugh "Jim" Downing
April 3, 1886 ~ April 20, 1968


James H. Downing, age 82, ranch manager of the Dead Horace at Serafine, New Mexico, died a week ago Saturday in the Las Vegas hospital following several weeks illness.

Mr Downing was born 4/3/1886 at Spring Creek, Indian Territory, northwest of Verden. He spent his early life in that area, and attended the first business college at Chickasha, and finished in Banking & business.

For a number of years, he was employed by the U.S. government as a cattle brand inspector out of the office in Lawton.

On 4/23/1913, he was married to Miss Carrie Langdon at Lawton. In 1920, they moved to New Mexico and she preceded him in death in Aug of 1960.

He lived on several ranches in New Mexico and at the time of his death, he was general manager of the Dead Horace ranch, where he spent the past 13 years.

Survivors are 5 sisters, Mrs Susan B. Cochran of Tuttle, & Mrs Rachel Briscoe of Ardmore, Mrs Pearl Kolar and Mrs Thelma Munn, both of Oklahoma City, & Mrs Rena Toptechey of Ardmore, 3 brothers, Earl Downing of Reno, Nev, Eden Downing of Antioch, Calif, & Ernest Downing of Oklahoma City.

Funeral services was held Thursday in the Sowers Memorial chapel with Rev Alvin McConnell Jr officiating. Music was furnished by Duane Ward. Pallbearers were Elbert Bazhaw, Russell Hambleton, Joe Conner, Don Condren, Jim Williams, & Frank Bennett.

Burial was in the Fairview cemetery, Tuttle.
