© Fort Smith, AR Times-Record Fort Smith Arkansas July 6, 2010 1912 ~ July 3, 2010 Velma B. Eskew Whitley, 98, of Barling died July 3, 2010, in Fort Smith. She was the daughter of Adam J. Brillhart and Anna Dalke Brillhart. Velma was a retired schoolteacher who taught over a period of 43 years in Oklahoma, serving Kiowa and Washita counties, Vinson High School, Sentinel High School, Verden High School, Meridian School in Chickasha, Pocasset High School and teacher/counselor at Lindsay High School. She lived and taught in Oklahoma until 1994 when she moved to Fort Smith. On Dec. 22, 1934, she was united in marriage to O.R. Eskew until his death Jan. 10, 1955. She was married to Raymond Whitley in October 1964 until his death June 24, 1985. She was also preceded in death by a son Eddie Joe Eskew on Jan. 10, 1955. She was a life member of the National Education Association, a member of the Oklahoma Education Association and Oklahoma Retired Educators Association. She was chosen Lindsay Teacher of the Year in 1969. She was educated in the schools of Western Oklahoma, graduated from Hobart High School in 1929 and received a bachelor of science degree from Southwestern State in 1936. In 1952, she received a master's in education from the University of Oklahoma. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Aldersgate Sunday school class. She is survived by one daughter, Ann Reynolds and her husband Bob of Fort Smith; grandchildren, Bret Hood and wife Laura of Fort Smith and Lesli Vreeland and husband Gordon of Grenada, Miss.; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Kendall and Grant Hood and Reagan Vreeland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in Roebuck Chapel of First United Methodist Church with burial at 4 p.m. at Fairlawn Memorial Cemetery in Chickasha, Okla., all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith. Pallbearers will be Bret, Zachary and Grant Hood, Bob Reynolds and Gordon Vreeland. Honorary pallbearers will be the Aldersgate Sunday school class. The family will greet friends in the Narthex of First United Methodist Church from 9-10 a.m. on Thursday prior to the service. |
