© The Chickasha Express-Star Chickasha, Oklahoma Monday, October 26, 2009 June 2, 1924 ~ October 23, 2009 Funeral services for Lonnie Buell Whatley, 85, of Chickasha, will be held Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in the College Heights Baptist Church. Lonnie Buell Whatley was born June 2, 1924, in Grady, Oklahoma, Jefferson county, the son of Elbert Whatley and Union America Craze Whatley. He died Friday, October 23, 2009, in Chickasha. Lonnie grew up and attended school in Jefferson County, Oklahoma. In February 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy during WWII. The ship on which he served was in the waters of Iwo Jima. He received his Honorable Discharge in February of 1946. He married Opal Brundage on March 23, 1946. Lonnie began working in the oil fields at Lindsay, Oklahoma in November of 1947. The family later moved to Chickasha. He had worked in the drilling department throughout Oklahoma, off shore in Louisiana, Michigan, Utah and Wyoming. He retired in 1984 as a Drilling Consultant. Lonnie and his wife enjoyed many lengthy vacations traveling by their RV and auto throughout 49 states and eight provinces of Canada. He was preceded in death by both parents, his wife, Opal Brundage Whatley, six brothers and two sisters. Survivors include one daughter, Diana Marzano, of Chickasha; one son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie and Rose Whatley, of Ardmore; grandchildren; Sam Marzano, Belynn Stearns and Trey Whatley, one great-grandson, Braxton Whatley; many sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Private interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home. |
